But, if I am in ketosis, does that mean I am losing weight? (or is this part of the CICO debate?)

Good question!
I've looked at multiple studies, and they all say there's no correlation between ketone levels and weight loss.
However, lots of people in this group would probably tell you otherwise.
CICO still applies, but ketones have an effect on both CI (by suppressing appetite) and CO (it takes energy to make ketones).
Are they a sign that you're losing weight? No. They can be made from dietary fat as well as from body fat.0 -

I think that it is more that if you are in ketosis that you are burning fat to make ketones for energy. If you ate 5,000 calories, you would still be making ketones, but you would be storing excess calories somewhere... Generally, if you eat to genuine hunger and relearn how to listen to your body, counting calories is positive reinforcement but not always critically necessary. If you don't trust that, or you're still relearning true hunger and such, count calories while staying in ketosis. There's really not right or wrong here. It's what works for you.0

Tsazani…I'm experiencing the opposite…I stayed at <30 carbs for 6 months, lost a good chunk of weight, but started feeling more hungry on the 1450 calories as not satisfying, and my fats were always over 75-80%.
I know for me decades of ruined health after CICO based low fat diets created these base problems, so my body is trained to do very well with far fewer calories. Add in older age, meds, health issues and I have no clue what is going on, or why. Sure, it could be HWC, or AS, or this or that, so I could be endlessly re-examining.
I am happy for the lost weight, but as others have said the "thrill is gone" when weight loss stops for MONTHS despite keeping the same WOE…figuring out the best way to proceed with LCHF by tweaking macros may help me, dropping or severely limiting this or that food, Fasting, more/different exercise, on and one etc etc … I loathe being focused 24/7, and refuse to be that self centered, not good for my mental health.
Just feeling well, overall, but not losing or very slow loss will have to be 'good enough' for now. Others may chose to "double down" and really tighten all bolts, but it would drive me crazy to be that obsessive.
Having a few members openly admit they are not having success after long periods on LC is helpful to hear, as our intense 'desire' cannot combat our body's vast, complex chemistry.0 -

@Ketogenicgurl I'm in that boat with you, for sure. I still feel energetic and such, but I'm having weird health flare ups of late. I've not lost any measurable weight since April, but I have shrunk one pants size, and my undergarments are ill fitting now, so I figure my body is finding it's pace.
There is a somewhat unpopular notion that for every 10 percent of body weight that you lose that you should focus on maintenance for several months (6 is recommended) to allow your body to get comfortable at that weight, etc. I guess I've done that, so it's time to get a move on, but unplanned limitations are slowing me down atm.
I figure as long as I feel good overall, the waxing and waning of my love affair with low carbing in general will carry on.0 -
KnitorMiss…yes we are in the same boat in the clothing issue!

Interesting!!! I've lost well over 10% so I am encouraged to hear my body is probably doing what it must for a few more months...this is what I mean by not stressing out and driving myself crazy…my life has so much more to find interesting from good books to politics to creative yard work that I won't waste the brain cells.0 -
The low hunger thing will change. I was like that in the beginning then had times of wanting to eat everything.
That's interesting knit I wish I had done that. I'm happy I lost as much as I did and so fast. From 180 to 142 in a little over six months. By the end though I was feeling drained and had lost or stopped growing new hair. Now I have all these short little hairs growing back sticking straight up on the top of my head lol. That was even when taking supplements and increased protein. Weight loss just really puts a strain on your body.
For OP: what wab said! He knows the scoop0
