I've read back through a lot of stuff and am still confused. What is a cut? When do you do it?

Cut just means cutting calories...in a caloric deficit. You have 3 choices when it comes to deciding your calorie goal. Maintain. Cut or Bulk. Bulk would be more calories than you need if your plan on putting on muscle. Cut is just deficit.
You do it after a reset if you need to drop fat.0 -
To add, it's terminology usually used in the lifting field when you are purposely going up and down in weight.
Bulking muscle and fat - cutting hopefully just fat.
I think it was used as an encouraging term, as if the weight that had been gained was purposeful, and now according to plan you are cutting just the fat.
Somewhat also to distinguish from just weight loss, which could include muscle, to cutting hopefully just fat.
I'd personally think that using it with others unfamiliar or actually familiar with term, would start a whole line of questioning that could easily end with them wondering if you had gained weight purposely then. Not sure.0
