Hi Guys,

Just thought I'd say hi as I've just joined the group. I couldnt see an introduction thread so hope it's ok to post here?

I'm James, from Liverpool. I'm pretty new to running so nowhere near the league of some of the members here but I've really enjoyed it so far and I've got my first 5k race on the 6th of December. It's the annual Liverpool Santa Dash so will be doing my first 5k dressed as Santa.

I used to weigh 350lbs so I've always thought that I was to heavy to run, but over the last few months as I've gained confidence (and got down to 223lbs ) I've been running a lot more and thought joining a group like this with challenges etc might be a good way of pushing me a little more :-)

Welcome, James! We were all new at some point; I became a runner in 2011 at the age of 55. When I first set out to become a runner, I ran for one minute . . . then had to slow to a walk. The thing is, limits like that don't last forever if you have the persistence and patience to train smart.

Welcome James! I would echo what Moby mentioned, in that we all have to start somewhere. The intention behind this group is just that as well. Yes there may be a few of us who have been running for a few years, but those of us who have a bit of experience are here to help the "newbies", and anyone else who needs a boost. We welcome all runners, no matter their ability or experience.

Your first 5k will be just the start of many more races to come. I guarantee it.

Hi James, Congratulations on your health and fitness accomplishments!
That's exciting that you are about to run your first 5 km race. If you have never experienced a road race before I'll give you my take on some things to expect. Your first race is usually more about getting used to the race atmosphere and environment, rather than the physical challenge, I'm sure you'll do great with the distance and course. It's often a bit overwhelming being surrounded by hundreds of other runners packed into a small area, I always dislike the starting lines. I always find it helpful to listen to some of my favourite music before the race, it gets me in my zone and kind of blocks out all the people and chaos around me. There's usually a lot of nervous energy at the starting line. When the race starts a lot of people start out too fast because they are getting pulled along by the people around them, and then after that first third of the race they are pooped out and feel crummy. Try to just start at your usual pace and warm up and progress at your own speed. If you have the energy pick up the intensity in the later aspects of the race.
I hope you have a great time in your race and enjoy the experience, it really is a unique experience.

Hi James I'm in southport. How did the Santa dash go? Ours is this sun but I'm not doing it because it's our girls Xmas night out on Saturday!
