Keto and Pregnancy?

Hi All,

me again!

So don't go telling the neighours (or my family for that matter) but by February 2016 ish my husband and I are wanting to start "trying" :) (if it happens before or after that's cool but that's our official go at making miniatures)

Anyway- does anyone have some resources on Keto during and/or post pregnancy? I prefer this WOE but also want to be informed so I know what I need to produce a viable larva as well as have a realistic discussion with my OBGYN/Delivering medical staff.

Thanks again; happy Sunday (and keep this tidbit to yourselves  If our families know they'll ask non-stop about it. That will likely drive me to drinking regular coffee, as opposed to BPCoffee)

    Oooo exciting - a secret! I won't tell your family I promise!

I don't know much about it, but apparently the zerocarbzen site has links to folks who have eaten nothing but meat while having and raising kids. Might be somewhere to start. If you're not already a member of the low carber daily forum on MFP, you might try there as it is a bigger group and you might get more response.

And thanks for keeping my secret

I saw a few links in this forum I will try to find them again but its about a few family where the woman were keto while pregnant and they are raising their kid of LCHF diets. Here on my side, I was not planning, but I have been keto for more then 2 months, but it messed up my cycle, I use the calendar since typically i am very regular but not anymore and surprise surprise I am pregnant. I am a bit worried since I want to keep this WOE, so I am currently researching it. I will come back here to post what I will find so take a look once in a while.
Yesterday I ran across a paper but the study was done in mice, and I know most conclusion reached in rodents regarding immune systems don't usually apply to human therefore, I don't believe their conclusion are appropriate for human when discussing a keto diet

I went through the sites very interesting. Maybe I will start a thread or blog where I report about the pregnancy so other worried mom have some more info. I went through scientific literature and I did not find appropriate studies yet...keep looking for more info

that livinlavidalowcarb one had a bunch of studies linked... And that first one, they had some pretty strong anecdotal evidence of the entire family...

Little update. I was meeting up with the whole panel of specialist in the obstetrics diabetic clinic. The whole team is supporting me with the keto even the dietician. The dietician said my diet is perfect and if I don't want to eat fruits it's OK I can focus on carbs from veggie. I still need insulin injection despite being below 40g of carbs sadly but that for the baby's health and mine I guess.
So if a dietician, endocrinologist, diabetes nurse and an obstetrician specialized in complicated pregnancies all believe my keto diet shouldn't be a problem well it shouldn't be.

Also all my previous pregnancies (5..with only 1 to term) were very difficult in terms of symptoms fatigue nausea ect. This is the best so far I feel great no fatigue no symptoms and it's my first keto pregnancy. As a comparison I was pregnant in august-september this year and had miscarriage while not keto and it was full of symptoms.

I'm new to this site/group, but I followed a ketogenic diet through the majority of my last pregnancy. I felt amazing and had a very easy and fast home birth and a very happy and healthy baby! I started eating a bunch of junk after she was born, but my pregnancy was amazing and her birth was so easy I couldn't believe it! Good luck!

Good to know! We always get so worry during pregnancy to make sure we are giving the best to this growing baby. Great to hear you had an amazing pregnancy and a healthy baby.
May I ask for which part of the pregnancy you were keto and if it was for health reason. Thanks

Definitely. I was under 50 grams of carb from about 10 weeks to the day she was born with a few exceptions here and there. I had some serious complications with my first pregnancy that I felt were caused by unregulated hormones, elevated blood sugar and insulin resistance. I gained over 40 pounds during my first pregnancy (started at 180) and was generally completely miserable. It was terrible.

This recent pregnancy was the total opposite. I had absolutely no complications (despite my history) and I genuinely enjoyed every second. I gained ZERO pounds (I started at 220 so I didn't need to gain any) - and ended up weighing less the day I had her than the day I got pregnant with her. Everything about this last pregnancy was amazing and I attribute it to my diet!

In fact, I felt better pregnant than I do now, and I think it's because I stopped eating a ketogenic diet - which is why I'm committed to getting back to feeling energetic, without any brain fog!

@ketomamma14, wow this is really motivating to read your story. I started this surprise pregnancy and I was already 2 months in keto diet. I am barely pregnant I am 6weeks, and I had to be put on insulin at 4 weeks despite being below 50g of carbs, so I really can't imagine my state if I wasn't keto.
You can do this, get back at it so you can be strong and healthy and full of energy for your kids.
I am also happy to hear you did not gain weight! I worked very hard and don't want to gain it all back. I had also gained about 50lbs in my first.
