Question from a newbie

I've started a new program, which is overseen by nurses and a doctor, and I'm on day 2. My question is regarding my keto test. It's only been 1 full day, and I've tested positive for keto, medium colored pink. I was told to expect it to take 3 days. Is this safe, or am I doing something wrong?

If your food log is complete, you're not actually getting enough calories to meet your basic metabolic rate, so it's not at all surprising that you're in ketosis already. The doctor who is supervising you can't possibly be recommending you only eat 300 calories a day, are they? Is the phendimetrazine just completely wiping out your appetite? If so, you may be on too high of a dose. Be careful with your precious self, 'k? I'm worried for you. The combination of ultra-low calories and a stimulant to suppress appetite doesn't sound safe. But, maybe you're just not really logging everything you eat?

I'm actually a 3rd shifter, so I have my breakfast at 5pm, lunch at 9 or 11pm, and dinner at about 2-3am, with snacks in between. I probably should've mentioned that. :) thank you for checking for me, I leave my diary open because I like getting the feedback.

Hi Hon - You should probably check this with the doctor for your program. Your calories are extremely low. The doctor is best equipped to provide feedback if your fast entry into ketosis is OK based on your program, or whether you need to make some adjustments.

You've gotten into Ketosis within a day. You are registering moderate levels on ketostix - while having had a gallon of water to drink. It looks like you had some significant exercise on Wednesday while at a significant calorie deficit both Tuesday and Wednesday.

The reason for ketosis usually taking 3 days, is that most people are not eating at the extreme caloric deficit that you are showing. I think ketosis is normal under these conditions - it's just more of a question of whether this is healthy.

I'm meeting with my doctor on Tuesday, so I'll definitely discuss this then. Can you tell me what you guys take in as far as calories? I'm definitely getting my amount of protein in, but I agree that it's not enough calories. I need to figure out how to get more in.

I target about 1500, plus I eat back calories from exercise. I do keto - low carb, high fat, moderate protein. I get most of my calories from fat.

My calorie count varies--I have it set at 1800 right now, but I eat back my exercise too! You can see my food log. I eat an imperfectly Paleo/low carb diet, and I follow the philosophy of trying to avoid metabolic damage while losing weight. You can learn a little more about that at http://eatmore2weighless.com/ The basic idea is to lose weight very slowly. So, my calories will tend to be higher than other folks. But I think 1500 is a more typical range for weight loss, with the lowest count I've heard around 1200. 300 calories is waaaaay low, lower even than the Medifast people, I think. The problem is that at such low calories for a long period of time, your body will tend to break down your muscles for energy, which will reduce your strength and metabolism overall. It can also cause heart problems.

I'm going to take a peek at your diary. Thanks for offering. Just FYI, that 300 calorie count was at the beginning of my day, at like 5pm. I work 3rd shift. Today's diary is updated with everything I ate already and everything I plan to eat at work tonight. Please feel free to take a peek. I also keep notes. Thank you! :)
