Hello! Welcome to the Winter Weight Loss group! The first installment in this 12 week program will be a discussion on Wellness. What is it? What does it mean? How do we each relate to this concept?

So What Is Wellness

By definition, Wellness is the balance between mental, physical, and spiritual health. Individually, we all have a different vision of wellness. Wellness is a mindful process of becoming internally aware of health in your life and the decisions you make to reach your goals.
Wellness does not begin and end with eating a head of lettuce, it is a multidimensional concept that consists of;

Each fragment individually is important, however, for the purposes of this program we will primarily focus on the aspect of Physical Wellness.

Each week for the duration of this 12 week program, you will receive information, advice, and statistics designed to help you better understand the relationship between your body’s physical and mental wellness and the development of lasting healthful habits.

Now, let’s talk about the major factors that contribute to balanced physical wellness.

Nutrition & Diet

Any time the word ‘diet’ is used in this program it is not in reference to a drastic reduction of caloric intake, a specific way of eating, or a brand or product. Diet is simply the sum total of a person’s food intake and nutrition is the benefits of those choices.

Exercise

It goes without saying that the human body needs some form of frequent physical exertion to maintain optimal health. Whether this is achieved by lifting heavy weights, spending a day on horseback, walking your dog, or an afternoon gardening, not only will this benefit your outward appearance, it will improve internal bodily functions, reduce and reverse signs of aging, and, most importantly, prevent future health conditions and subsequent costs.

Mental

Mental wellness should be considered equally important for peak physical health. For the purposes of our program, the most important mental health factors to consider are those that surround listening to your body;

Make sure you are getting enough sleep, letting your body rest when it needs to will not only keep you performing at your peak mentally but will help your long term fitness goals. If something is too challenging or overwhelming, evaluate the situation and adjust so that you are comfortable.

Most importantly, use the next few weeks to understand the effects foods have on your body when consuming them. Being mindful about what you eat isn’t just about portion sizes and food group, but understanding the way consumption makes you feel.

Health is not a passive event that happens to you, it is an active process that takes time and mindfulness to incorporate into your life. If you let it, the next 12 weeks will provide you with the foundation needed to set yourself up for a life time of health.
