Last year I mentored several newbies here but only one of them stuck around. The gym will be crowded as well. I like it though, it means people are trying and some of them will succeed.0

I remember the first Weight Watchers meeting of the year when I was doing that plan! You would think they were giving away cars. by mid February or March it would be down to the usual numbers.0

I've noticed in the main forums that many people are mentioning coming back again. It makes me wonder why so many people set a goal for the new year and then let it slide. But continue the lather, rinse, repeat cycle rather than trying something different that sticks.0

I have to give up lifting weights at the gym every January because it is just too crowded. I don't know why people think making long term commitments on January 31st while drunk is a good idea. Will be back to lifting weights at the gym in February as usual.0

I'll admit it, I'm one of those people. The thing is, I was still following my heathy eating lifestyle. I had a busy summer and autumn fixing, selling my house then moving mid November.
I did manage trips to the gym during those times and kept weight gain to a minimum. (8lbs).
As of Boxing Day, I'm down close to that 8lbs and plan on a modest weight decrease of 10-15lbs over the next year. I want my weight loss goal to be not only realistic and attainable, but also sustainable. I also have my type2 diabetes to manage so keeping things on track is a must. I am not on any meds nor do I ever want to be.
I returned here mainly because it's a good way to keep myself accountable and the advice here seems to come from life experience not internet searches. I also enjoy the fact there are way more Mature topics and conversations. If I can even garner one piece of info a week that helps me in my goals it's worth the time to come here. Even more so if I can help out someone with my experience, successes and failures.

I am amazed that ppl will buy expensive gym memberships that they don't use. I understand buying a month to month $15 Blink membership, but a $165 or $210 Equinox membership, with a year long contract? It's a huge amount of wasted money.
I'm coming off of a broken ankle and torn ligament injury now; my cast comes off next week and I'm starting physical therapy soon. So I assume I'll miss the brunt of the Resolutioners which doesn't make me unhappy !!!0 -
Heard a sermon preached a couple of years ago about starting changes. Basically, if we need to change something, we should just change it. It doesn't need to be started on New Year's Day or Monday morning. So when I realized that I needed to make a major lifestyle change, I started it. My current MFP journey began on December 7th 2014. I don't think I would have done as well by waiting. I just did it and kept doing it.
...and one of the first things I did to reduce stress and help me to be more successful on my MFP lifestyle journey was to cancel the gym membership that I never used. Go figure.0 -

Not that I don't love my fancy gym membership, but if you want to be fit, it has to come from you. Not because of the fancy lotion in the locker room or the young trainer who gives you a lot of attention. YOU.

About half of the folks in today's yin class were newbies. There was an issue with the heating system and the room was only 57f... I was absolutely okay in t-shirt and shorts... but most folks were wearing sweaters or similar. Everyone (except me) said it was soooo cold. Perhaps next week, it won't be as busy of a class.0

I've really noticed the new people at the gym this week. It's been crowded, even at 5:30 am when I go......but luckily I just go to my little corner upstairs with my mat and weights and do my thing. The stairmaster isn't that popular and we have a lot of them so I never have any trouble finding a spot. When I go downstairs for the squat rack I haven't noticed more people there but at the machines it's definitely crowded. The only thing that bothers me is when someone is sitting on "my thigh machine" looking at their phone for 20 minutes and not really doing much..........LOL.
One thing I've noticed is that quite a few of my friends here at MFP have had anniversaries in the last couple of weeks which means that some of last years fitness goals (resolutions) were accomplished or at least are still in the works.0 -
I am a newbie. Yes it is the first of the year but making a lifestyle change was not a New Years resolution. I'd like to think I will not be one of those typical newbies filling up your classes and gyms for only a few months. I haven't run out to buy new equipment or new workout clothes. I'm exhausted. Poor eating and lack of exercise has taken a toll on my body. I'm tired of being tired and not feeling well. I didn't set a date to make a change. I don't even remember the exact moment I decided to take care of myself, it just happened. I came to MFP for the tools and was hoping to find some support along the way.0

This is a great place for tools and support. We all made the decision at some point, while crowded gyms can be annoying, it is great that good choices are being made. Eventually it sticks.

Amen. I quit smoking 4 years ago, during one of the most stressful times of my life. It was not my first time quitting either. For some reason this time it worked.
Then I joined MFP when the scale (and my pants size) started creeping up.
The only New Year's resolution that I made that I kept was the one that I resolved to never make another New Year's resolution.

Welcome to those returning or just starting. I am an optimist and hope that what ever gets people to think about a change in their lives will lead to actual change. I am a also a realist, so I understand that some people have not hit that place, which seems to be slightly different for most everyone, where real change will happen.0
