I am watching "Fit to Fat to Fit" on A&E. I had never seen it but it is very good.
If I wanted to buy anything today locally, I couldn't. This is our only supermarket:

It's just started snowing here and I think the predictions are 3-8 inches. Our Comcast service switched to seasonal last night. I have no Internet and only the basic TV channels. it's a much lesser charge for not being here. I thought for sure we'd be on the road by now. In fact, if not for the storm predictions, we were leaving today. I'm at the library checking emails and logging in here. I may get back here first of the week but posts from me will be sporadic this week. So I haven't fallen off the edge of the world. I 'm just lacking Internet at home. I usually watch things like Property Brothers over the weekend so I'll miss that but what can you do. It would take 24 hours to turn everything back on and then I'd be shutting it off again 3 days late. I have to admit, I miss the Internet more than TV. Stay safe nd stay home if you can until the snow passes and the roads are clear.0
-
Helene--Thanks for the update. I do hope your snow is reasonable and not more than expected. Don't venture out unless absolutely necessary.0
-
According to the news, we supposedly got something like 29 inches!! Because of the drifts it almost looks outside like we did nothing the last two days. PLUS they plowed and there is now a 4-foot pile at the end of the driveway that may well have to be knocked down by hand. DH watched the snow outside the back door constantly as he was worried he wouldn't be able to get the door open. And of course to get the snow blowers out he has to be able to get to the garage and be able to open the doors. (It's more like a huge shed/barn and the door doesn't roll up like a garage but opens outward.
Helene - stay warm and good luck on the trip south!
Jean - that photo of your supermarket is something!0 -
Maryanne--I wondered how you fared. Your DH, at least, thought about the snow's effect on the door. I went to open the rear storm door to check things and found snow blocking it. I gradually got the snow worked back so I could open the door enough to squeeze through. I then removed all the snow from the door. I managed to find someone to come yesterday afternoon to remove the snow. Yes, you had a big snow. I so hope it doesn't take long to get back to normal.
Thanks to Facebook, I was able to see some pics elsewhere of our little town. This is one of the courthouse which looks as if it was taken from the drugstore.

Wow! You guys have really been pounded by the snowstorm. Down here in North Texas, we got nothing!
This is the start of day 3 in the hospital. My surgery on Friday went well and I've felt much more comfortable pain-wise since. The doctor did not put me back in a splint or the boot, so my foot is dressed and wrapped with elastic bandages and it feels so much better. I think tomorrow they will change out the dressing and that is supposed to be very painful, but the reward is that I will likely be allowed to take a shower when they do it. My last shower was on December 27th, the day I fell, so you can imagine just how much I am looking forward to it! My first night in the hospital was rough. Think they woke me up 9 times during the night to check vital signs, change out my antibiotic, refill my saline drip, etc. Last night I only remember being awoken twice and went right back to sleep afterward so today I am feeling much more rested. I may be allowed to go home tomorrow but it could also be Wednesday, depending on which antibiotic I need to go home on. There is a possibility I will have to have a pic line for an IV antibiotic and if that is the case, it will be Wednesday. They are waiting for the results of the cultures that were taken during the surgery to determine the antibiotic I will go home with. Should know that outcome today or tomorrow. So that's the update from here.
Stay warm and dry, and most of all SAFE, everyone!0 -
Pam--It is so good to see you posting. You will thoroughly enjoy that shower, and will likely linger as long as possible. I'm glad the surgery went well and that you feel more comfortable. Hospitals are somewhat noted for not letting you sleep well. I know you are anxious to go home as soon as possible but also want to go home with the best antibiotic. Hang in there!
Helene--How did you fare when the storm moved in? I hope all is well.
I just finished watching another episode of "Fit to Fat to Fit." This show on A&E is really good. It features a trainer who gains weight so that he can experience more realistically what fat people experience as well as their emotions. He experienced differences in what he was able to do with family, and expressed fears that their were some foods he liked so much that he might prefer to remain fat. He and his client then began the process of losing weight together.0 -
I lost a pound last week. Headed the right direction.
We finally had a snow plow come through last night but they only did one lane and they didn't put down any salt so we have an ice covered one land street.
I need to make a decision about the pet expo this weekend. I'm dithering. I just sent out an email to everyone who is scheduled to work to get their input. Time to take into account that I'm not alone in this!0 -
Maryanne--Congrats upon the pound. I also lost one. The snow recovery is going to be a long process.
We are closed again today for some reason. This is a time-lapsed video of the snow accumulation at the time it was posted. It is condensed to 40 seconds. So much in a short period of time. This is by far the coolest time lapse video I've seen from the Blizzard of 2016. Wayne Bennett's camera took one photo every two minutes for nearly 27 hours. He captures 40" of snow over 40 seconds in Martinsburg, WV.

Jean - that is cool! Congrats on the pound!!0
-
Jean..That's very cool. we ended up with about 10 inches. we'd made arrangements to have the snow cleared and he showed up yesterday around lunchtime. We stayed put and watched football. I only have a handful of channels on the seasonal plan. I'm out running errands and reading my email on the library computer. After this, I'm heading home to laundry and packing. we leave Wednesday. DH is nervous about the roads in DC. We've seen the news coverage. I told him we'll be on 95/495 and I'm sure they'll be clear by Thursday. I'll bet the highway is in good shape already.
Maryanne..Figure out if you think people will get out to the Pet Expo. It's not worth doing if the crowds are small because of the snow. It's a lot of work for you.
Pam..I'm glad you're doing better and feeling more comfortable. Enjoy your shower and I hope you get to go home soon. Has the infection slowed your projected recovery time? I hope not.0 -
Helene - keep your eye on the weather. There is apparently the possibility of another storm at the end of the week.
DH and I are both guessing that the major roads are probably clear (we haven't been out yet) but you wouldn't want to be stopping to spend the night in the Baltimore or DC area.
No one could get to our office today which sort of surprised me.
We finally had a plow come through but they only did the center. So we basically have a neighborhood with one lane streets. Oh, joy!
I haven't heard yet if the federal government is working tomorrow or if Baltimore schools are open.0 -
It looks likely that I will get to go home tomorrow, if all of the home health issues are worked out by then. I have a pic line which requires home health assistance and I also will go home with a vacuum pump on my incisions on my ankle, also requiring home health. Apparently the two different services I will need cant be provided by the same home health providers, so the discharge people are working to get all the t's crossed and i's dotted and find me two agencies that can do what I need.
Today was a busy day. I did get my shower, which was just heavenly! After that I had a pic line inserted in my right arm so that I can have IV antibiotics after I am discharged. Apparently I will be on this antibiotic for several weeks. I had a visit from the PT people who insisted that I walk around some using a walker. Actually, saying I'm walking is misleading since I'm not allowed to put weight on my foot yet. So I hop on one leg using the walker for balance. I had barely recovered from the pic line procedure and PT when they came in to change the dressings on my ankle. That was extremely painful and I was very tired and in pain afterward. I rested for awhile then ordered my dinner which was pretty good. So now I'm just resting, watching some TV and trying to catch up on what's going on in the world.
Funny story. Apparently I have quite a reputation as a chocoholic. Two of my friends brought me a beautifully wrapped package yesterday, which turned out to be a 5lb. Hershey bar. It's huge! Everyone who comes into my room does a double take when they see it. I've had people coming by from all over the hospital to see this behemoth!0 -
Pam - I'm glad you're progressing but SO sorry you're having to go through all this. I hope they get the home health care worked out so you can get home!
I still remember trying to "walk" with a walker with only one foot (which was when I was glad I'd insisted on a wheelchair as well). I also still remember my first shower after the accident. It's the little things!
It wasn't until I got to physical therapy a few months later that the physical therapist showed me the right way to walk with crutches. It was such an "ah ha" moment. I couldn't figure out why no one else had shown me. I also wished someone had suggested upper arm exercises so that I'd be ready for crutches.
The 5-lb Hershey bar is a hoot!!

DH went to work today. He left me a message. Apparently the main roads aren't nearly as clear as we'd envisioned. And he said two lane roads are at most 1-1.5 lanes wide including the road we have no choice but to go on to get anywhere. That's because people haven't dug their cars out (there is parking allowed on one side of the road.)
I called off the pet expo. I can't even imagine what that place looks like. The bulk of that effort falls on a disabled volunteer and myself. There's no way she should be trying to walk (with 2 crutches) across the fairground parking lot. Parking is always an issue at this event and with all this snow in the parking lot I think it will be atrocious. Now that I know about the roads I'm even more convinced I made the right call. Plus there's apparently the possibility of another storm at the end of the week!0 -
Pam--What an ordeal! I am sorry that you have to go through this. I know that you are looking forward to going home. Yes, the shower will be thoroughly enjoyed. It is the small things like that which we take for granted that make such a great difference.
Helene--I do hope you have a safe trip. I'm sure the Interstates will be cleared by then. I know you will be busy taking care of all the last minute needs before leaving. Be safe!!
Maryanne--Calling off the pet expo is likely a good move. It takes much effort to prepare, plus people have not completely dug out so workers and those attending would not justify the effort.
The main roads are now clear here. The Department of Highways has been working almost non-stop. As a result, I decided to venture out to the city yesterday. The roads were clear but the snow piled up on street corners made visibility a little challenging in intersections without a light. I decided to go to the podiatrist as the foot is not improving. She found areas of pain that I didn't even know existed. Off to have x-rays done. I have to return. This is a pic of my car, a 2016 Cruze LT in champagne silver.

Pam..What an ordeal you've been through! I hope the recovery goes smoother from here on out. Will DH be doing the cooking for you when you get home? My husband found crutches pretty difficult when he broke hi heel. He transitioned to a cane as soon as possible. The therapist instructed him that you use the can on the good side. He'd been doing just the opposite. You really do need training for all these apparatuses if you've never had them before. Is your pain level down now that you're on the IV antibiotic? Enjoy the chocolate.
Jean..Your car is gorgeous! We leave in the morning. We'll stick to the highways for the most part. we're staying overnight in Stafford, VA but it's not too far off the interstate. We've stayed there before so we know where it is as well as the quality of the hotel.
Maryanne..You made the right call on the pet Expo. I'll bet you wouldn't have made much on it and it's too much work for that amount of effort. We'll be at my brother's in SC by Friday so I think we'll miss any future storms. He just got rain out of he last storm. I'm so glad to be finally starting the trip. Normally, we would have left 6 weeks ago.0 -
Helene, DH can and does cook, but we have many friends and neighbors who have said that they will be bringing dinner for us for the next few weeks. A neighbor mentioned an app that you can set up so that people can register for the date they can bring something and see what you've had so they don't duplicate the same meal that someone else brought. She offered to set it up so I need to talk with her about that. My friends from the gym have been wonderful so far, and the circle of people who are offering help is growing, so I think we are well set on food.
I will go home tomorrow. I'm a little nervous about going home with the vacuum pump and the pic line, but I'll have home health coming in to assist with those things so I know it will be ok. I think I will have the IV antibiotic for at least 4-6 weeks. I don't have any idea how long the vacuum pump will be needed.
Helene, have a safe trip and enjoy sunny Florida when you get there!0 -
Jean - beautiful car! Hopefully the podiatrist can figure out why your foot hurts!
Helene - hope the trip goes great!
Pam - sounds like your food will be taken care of - that's great!0 -
Helene--Have a safe journey. I think the weather will not be a problem.
Pam--Hope you go home as scheduled; home health will be a great help.
Maryanne--She is trying to rule in or rule out fractures of the tiny bones on upper right side of foot. She said that people can walk with this being done and not realize it.
I think my picture is obese. Perhaps I should have put it on a weight loss (size reduction) before I posted it.
I had the usual Quaker Weight Control oatmeal for breakfast.0 -
I had wonderslim apple cinnamon oatmeal for breakfast. Pulled out my mini boxes of raisins and discovered I'd purchased mini boxes of yogurt raisins instead. Grrrrr......
Went out got gas, bought a coffee maker (ours died this morning), and went to two grocery stores. The stores had more stocked than I expected but the dang giant had their "team" working to rearrange the shelves and it was hard to get around. They don't use local employees to do that. They have teams that go from store to store to do that. They were almost totally blocking the frozen food aisles.0 -
Maryanne--Congrats upon getting that essential item---the coffee maker!!
Also, sorry that your boxes of raisins were yogurt raisins.
I haven't had raisins in some time. I might buy some on the next food run.
We finally had school today on a delay. With freezing tonight and resulting
black ice, another delay will be held tomorrow.
I have to go to the city tomorrow for the urologist appointment. I guess we
will be scheduling the next bladder scope to see if the cancer has returned.
I am watching My 600-Lb. Life. I'm curious as to how a skinny man is married
to a very overweight woman. What was the attraction? Opposites attract? It had
to be qualities beyond the surface.0 -
If you do even a little googling about some of the 600-lb life characters you may find yourself, as I did, stumbling into a world you never wanted to know existed - of men who have a fetish for really fat women. I backed out of all that as fast as I could.
There has been at least one episode where the husband left after the wife lost the weight.
I also suspect there's a little bit of a mercenary motive in some cases. You'll notice many of these people don't seem to work. I suspect they are in many cases living off the disabled person's disability benefits.
Finally I suspect in some cases the skinny partner (male or female) has an unhealthy need to be needed.
All pure conjecture on my part but I have an active imagination!0 -
I've got to have raisins in my hot cereal. I buy the tiny boxes that are 45 calories. I put the little boxes in a ziploc bag to keep them fresh.
I offered DH the yogurt raisins and he had never heard of such a thing. Sometimes his knowledge of what goes on in the world is amazingly lacking.
I'm not crazy about the coffee maker but my choices were limited. First of all by the fact that I was at Walmart (which I usually avoid like the plague because I HATE it but it was the only place I could think of to go on my way to the grocery store). And secondly by the fact that our coffee maker can't be more than 7 1/2 inches wide. (I went equipped with a tape measure.) The good news was that the Walmart parking lot wasn't in bad shape considering. The grocery stores were much worse. I'll probably go online at some point and find one I like to keep as my spare.
I'm aiming for six 25 minute sessions a week on the treadmill. That gets me to 2 1/2 hours which I think is a good start to the year.
I did good on the food yesterday. Today I'm planning an all grocery store frozen food day. Adding salad and vegetables of course.

Maryanne--I have a Black and Decker coffeemaker which I bought at WalMart 3 years ago. It works very well.
WalMart and Amazon are my favorite places. Some WalMarts are better than others. There are two in the city,
on opposite ends of the city. One is much, much better than the other and carries a greater variety of food,
including more gourmet selections for those who enjoy those. It is located in a more well-well to do area.
Good job on the food and also on the exercise.
I'm heading to the city once it thaws from the current 10 degrees for an appointment with the urologist. Right
now, I'm about to have the usual Quaker Weight Control oatmeal. I'm trying to eat what is available in the house.
I confess that I would love to have a Special K flatbread breakfast sandwich.0 -
Good morning! I am having the usual breakfast. I went to the city yesterday for the follow up
appointment with the urologist. As expected, I'll be having another exploratory of the bladder,
and kidneys in February.
An individual I knew from the old NS days posted on FB that she had lost 100 pounds. She had
been having problems losing after a period of time. I asked her what she had done, and she said
that she started using HCG drops.0 -
What are HGC drops? Leaving VA this morning and stopping in SC for a weekend visit with family. We'll leave for FL from there on Monday. Pam..I hope you're on the way home and that the rest of the recovery is good news. Jean..Good luck on your upcoming tests. Maryanne..Sure was a lot of snow up in your area. The highways were clear and dry though.0
-
I got home from the hospital late Wednesday afternoon and have been trying to get into a routine of dealing with the three times a day IV infusions and vacuum pump care, as well as physical therapy. It seems the home health people are here several times a day or calling to set up more appointments, etc. it keeps me busy anyway.
I think the HCG drops stand for Human Chorionic Growth hormone. It was very popular a few years ago and people did lose a lot of weight quickly because it also had a diet restricted to about 500 calories per day. Supposedly the HCG drops killed the appetite so that you weren't that hungry eating only 500 calories per day. I don't know anyone who did this so I don't know how effective they were in maintaining their weight loss.0 -
We do have a lot of snow. I went out to do a few errands and I'd say (1) there is absolutely nowhere for pedestrians to walk which means come Monday I don't see how they get the kids back in school (I saw some adults taking enormous risks); (2) most parking lots have 50-60% of their usual spots (the pet expo will be a disaster parking-wise this weekend; I'm SO glad we didn't go); (3) the end of our street has a sudden new HUGE pile of snow that makes it impossible to see enough to pull out safely (I guess they were doing more plowing last night). Fun and games south of the Mason Dixon line.
Jean - I'm glad they're keeping a close eye on you!
Helene - enjoy your family time.
Pam - all I can say is "wow"! My sister had some fancy antibiotic setups when she had stubborn Lyme disease but nothing like you're going through.
I'm reading the Joanna Fluke Hannah Swenson books. Sort of "fluffy" mysteries. And she has a cat which all fluffy sleuths have to have. There are a ton of cookie recipes in the book. I wonder if they read all those recipes when they put the book on audio. Just curious!
I thought I had a sudden huge, dark floater yesterday. Moment of panic. Then I realized it was a smallish spider on a thin web hanging from the ceiling. Yikes!
Today is my 26th day of "eating right".0 -
That HCG craze is back apparently. I saw a weight loss clinic that is now offering the injections but not the drops.
True HCG can only be administered under a doctor's supervision. Supposedly, the drops cannot be guaranteed to
be quality, etc.
Pam--That is one very overwhelming process. I do hope you successfully manage it and that it takes care of the
problem. You have been through so much.
Maryanne--Congrats upon 26 days of "eating right." You can really commit yourself and do the program right.
Helene--Enjoy the visit with the family in SC and a safe trip ahead to your Florida winter home.
I can't wait until this winter is over; all I want to do is eat. I know it is from boredom.
I wish I hadn't posted that pic of the car. I had no idea that it would make the margins expand to make it fit. By
the time I realized it, it was too late to edit. Now, I just don't type to the right margin but break before that point.
