Pam - I remember the first time I saw a knee scooter. I had rehabbed and was back doing everything and I saw one at a flea market. It was sort of one of those "hit myself up the side of the head moments". Like why hadn't I discovered that when I could have used it?0

I lost a pound and a half this week. Pretty much on track.
I'm definitely at an age where there's no room for error!
I had Wonderslim pancakes for breakfast, and a huge salad with turkey for lunch. For dinner I'm planning a NS burger. I still have quite a stash of those.0 -
I attempted to get on my scale yesterday but I was only partially successful in determining my weight. Since I have to keep all my weight on my uninjured foot, the scale never gave a clear reading, but my best guess is that I've lost about 5 pounds. Hard way to do it, but I'm thrilled to see a loss!
I'm doing much better than last week. I think I must have picked up a bug of some sort because for about 4 days I felt terrible. I had no energy, nausea, and a bit of diarrhea and just felt awful. I finally started feeling better on Sunday and now I have enough energy that I'm planning to go to a friend's house for a couple of hours this afternoon. She hosts a knitting group that one of the members dubbed "The Knitwits", and it's a lot of fun. She is a very accomplished knitter and she is teaching all of us some of her tricks. I've been working on a baby blanket for one of my friend's first grandchild, so I already have a project I can bring.
My ankle is improving. When I came home from my 5-day hospital stay I had a wound vacuum attached to the two incision sites. Yesterday the nurse was able to discontinue the vac on one of the wounds because it is close enough to closing that it no longer benefits from the vac. We have to change the dressing on it daily and I continue to need the vac on the other, much larger and deeper wound, but I'm already more comfortable with the change. I think I'm finally seeing a tiny bit of light at the end of the tunnel!0 -
Pam.What an ordeal. I'm glad you're turning the corner. We met our new neighbor and her 2 dogs. DH threw tennis balls for the dogs while I got acquainted with Bonnie. We don't know a lot of people here so it's nice to have a friendly neighbor. We finished the lanaii and are emptying the 2 bedrooms so we can carpet shop this weekend. I'd like to have those rooms done before my family start visiting and need a place to sleep.0

Maryanne--Congrats upon the weight loss. "Just do it" seems to be working for you.
Helene--It sounds as if you are making progress in establishing relationships in your southern home, as well as redoing the bedrooms.
Pam--Congrats upon your weight loss also. I am sorry about the lack of energy because of the bug but great news on the ankle improvement. Seeing progress does give hope!
I had the Special K Protein cereal with milk for breakfast, the Dannon Light and Fit Greek yogurt for mid-morning snack. Lunch will be the Progresso Light chicken alfredo soup. Dinner will be a Lean Cuisine pizza and steamed veggies.
School is closed. Mother nature had a hissy fit and shed a bunch of the white stuff. The weather person had predicted this a few days ago. Wrecks all over as the temps froze the roads. I needed the day off to help take care of the bug. I worked yesterday but it wiped me out and I really felt bad when I got home.0 -
Jean..Sounds like you needed that snow to rest. I hope you feel more energetic tomorrow. I got a report from my cat sitter today. Cheyenne is doing very well and is happy at home. Debbie visits her twice a day and spends some quality time with her. The fellow we lined up for snow plowing is keeping the driveway open so she can get in for Cheyenne. I'm trying to log my food again. I love this site but it doesn't love my computer. I end up with pop ups and somtimes lose my entries mid stream. Here's hoping it cooperates better.0
-
Pam - you're going through too too much but I'm glad you've gotten a little bit of good news.
Helene - think of us up here in the snow!
Jean - you must have gotten it worse than we did. It snowed all day yesterday but didn't even lay on the grass. Sort of strange.
I've got a motley selection of frozen foods on my spreadsheet today! For breakfast, the NS frozen cinnamon bun.
My NS SS order came yesterday so I have one of everything new to try.
0 -
I brought a bunch of NS from the last order before I canceled. It came just after Dh's heart attack and I didn't even open the box for a month. I'm working that in to my routine along with foods I'm cooking. We got some exercise by walking on the beach a bit. it was chilly and windy and Red Tide is causing dead fish to wash up on the beach. So we only did about 15 minutes before we headed for the car.0

Tomorrow I'll most likely be "on the road" over lunch time (taking the next mailing to the vet and then stopping at the grocery store on the way home) so I may get a chance to try the new chocolate cherry lunch bar. Sounds good - we'll see.
While I still have some of the mac n cheese I want to make sure I use it (it does get stale). So today and tomorrow I think I'll have that mixed with the dinner chili to make two meals.
The Giant was really limited in the available salad mix they had so I don't have my usual Veggie Lover's here. The gaps in the produce section were erratic. They had signs up about produce issues due to weather in the south and west.0 -
That's tough when you can't get decent produce. Veggie lover is my favorite bagged salad. I started the day with oatmeal. I'm trying to make healthier choices while I'm in FL.

Pam..When MIL had hip replacement surgery, she told my BIL how exhausted she was. She couldn't figure out why since she was mostly resting. he's a scientist and he told her that her body was using a lot of energy healing itself. That made sense to me. That's probably why you're low energy in spite of not doing much.0
-
Happy Friday everyone. It's a beautiful day here. It's finally warm like it usually is in FL this time of year. I've gotten back to drinking more water and I'm logging my food again. I have a high school reunion this fall so it would be nice to lose some weight before then.0

The sun is shining here but it's COLD.
I went by the vet this morning to drop off the next mailing. Got caught in beltway traffic. It takes next to nothing to bring the Baltimore beltway to a halt. Before I left I had to go to the storage unit because apparently they never got my check for this month. Blizzard did a job on the mail. I was in a panic (visions of our inventory being sold on Storage Wars dancing in my brain) but luckily I wasn't even late. The rational part of my brain knew they'd be better off just charging me a late fee than absconding with my stuff but still..... Then I hit two grocery stores on the way home. I think I have everything on my list that's available in any store around here.
I do think I'd better get over to the storage unit soon and pull my diplomas. When I packed up my office I put everything in the storage unit. I definitely should bring the diplomas here. I'll likely never put them up again but still, I'd hate to lose them. The inventory could be replaced.
I had oatmeal for breakfast and a NS lunch bar for lunch.
I think I'm going to break out one of the 5-day JC kits for next week. I'm home all 5 days so it should be a good week for it. I pulled out the grocery list and got just a couple things that I don''t normally get so I can stick to the plan as written. Like an adventure (yeah I can convince myself of most anything)! I also discovered there are food coupons in the kit good until 12/31/16 so if I do a couple months of JC food this year I'll have some coupons!

Good morning, everyone! I've been very ill. In addition to a back set with the cold which has left me exhausted, I developed an allergic reaction to something and my eyes and face were swollen. After treatment, they are almost back to normal. I guess I was allergic to something I had handled and transferred it to my face before I was able to wash my hands. Carelessness at times can backfire. I had to cancel the Monday procedure because I'm not feeling well plus another storm may move in on Monday. So far, the weather people have been on target.
We are snowed in again with 5 degree temps. Just another beautiful day in "paradise." I am so ready for Spring and DayLight Savings time.
0 -
Jean - I'm SO sorry to hear you've been sick but glad you were able to get treatment in between storms!! But it's a PITA you don't know what you're allergic to.
It's very cold here but minimal snow and the sun's shining at least.
I had my usual Saturday morning eggs, egg beaters and whole wheat roll this morning. I look forward to that. I stir in what's probably at least 1 1/2 vegetable servings too! Sammy was very interested so I had to keep an eye on him and make sure he didn't try to eat the raw egg. He's "antsy" because DH has the cat porch shut off.
Today is my 40th day of faithfully doing a spreadsheet for my day's food!
I need to go out and refill the bird feeders but it's cold!
We had a HUGE flock of robins here the other day. They weren't interested in the food but drank and drank. DH looked it up and apparently there are "northern robins" to whom we're "south for the winter". They emptied the heated bird bath. Haven't seen them since.

Jean,,I'm so sorry you've been so sick. Did you handle anything new this week that might have triggered the allergy. Were you able to get a new date? Hopefully it's a date beyond when you'll get any snow.
Maryanne..You're doing an impressive job with that spreadsheet. I had a similar breakfast today. A combo of an egg and SW Eggbeaters, a NS donut and half an orange. Spell check want to change donut to donuts. I guess they don't think a person could eat just one. LOL. I got a jury duty notice yesterday. The date they selected is before I'll be back so I called and rescheduled it to fall. The Cape roads are so clogged with traffic in the summer and I could pick any date within a year. I wanted to go in September and they only had 3 available dates. I guess a lot of people must avoid the summer traffic.
I was down a pound today. I have 34 weeks until the reunion so that gives me a decent length of time to get a decent loss. I'd like to be 40 pounds less and that's possible with the time frame I have. The last time I did really well was when I was getting ready for my nephew's wedding. If I did it then I can do it again.
Pam..How are you feeling today?0 -
Helene - that's hilarious about the spell check. Congratulations on the pound loss!!
My only real "public event" this year is our client seminar. It's on cinco de mayo this year. I'll see what I can lose by then. I keep telling myself whatever it is by then it will be better than if I did nothing at all!
I had the NS BBQ chips and the dark chocolate sea salt nut bar recently. The chips aren't bad and the bar is just fantastic! A lot like eating a KIND bar (which is probably cheaper).0 -
Jean, I'm so sorry you've been so ill but I'm glad to hear you're feeling a little better now. A sudden allergic reaction like that can be scary. I had something similar a few years ago and my eyes itched so bad I just wanted to scratch and rub them, even though I knew it was the wrong thing to do. I had never had springtime allergies before, but since then I've had the same thing happen a couple of times, though not as bad as the first time. I still don't know exactly what it is that I react to but I assume it must be a springtime pollen of some sort.
Maryanne, I'm sorry you're dealing with the cold, but really glad to hear how well you're doing with your spreadsheet tracking. It sounds like you've really figured out what works for you. Your breakfast sounded really good!
Helene, congrats on the pound lost! You have a good plan for weight you want to lose before the reunion and it sounds like a very reasonable goal. Have you been able to do any water aerobics since arriving in Florida?
I'm doing pretty well today. I just finished a shower and washing and drying my hair. That always makes me feel better. Right now DH is doing the dressing change on one of my wounds and I am trying to distract myself while he does it. He's very gentle, but there is always a little bit of pulling to get the old gauze off. I know I'm progressing, but it is taking way too long! I am so ready to be allowed to put some weight on that foot so I can be more mobile. My next doctor's appointment is a week and a half away, so I'm hoping by then I will be allowed to bear some weight on it.

Pam..No water aerobics yet. I haven't joined the Rec Center yet because it's been so cool here in the mornings. They don't hold the classes if it's less than 65 degrees and most mornings haven't been that warm. It's been unusually cool since we got here. I can join for a short period of time so when it warms up, I'll join. It didn't make sense spending the money before I could take the classes I like. When the pollen seasons starts, try washing your face and rinsing your eyes as soon as you come inside. That should help reduce your exposure to the allergen. And don't rub your eyes before you can wash up. I hope the doctor's appointment goes well and that you can start to put a little weight on the leg. How's the knee scooter working out?

Helene--It is a bummer that your weather has been cooler than usual. Thanks for the suggestions on the reducing the allergic reactions. I know what caused the problem as I did some detecting and reduced it down to the only thing different. It was a topical antibiotic which I had used before but this one was a different brand with an added ingredient the other didn't have.. When I read the info on this specific preparation, it warned not to use around nose or eyes because of likelihood of swelling and rash. Apparently, I had rubbed my eyes before I had an opportunity to wash my hand because of interruption, etc. Thanks to the Benadryl four times a day, the application of hydrocortisone four times a day, the ophalmic eye drops four times a day and another eye drops, it is now gone with just a hint of change in color of skin where it existed. I had used the 'good" topical antibiotic upon recommendation of the ENT for years. I just failed to see that the packaging said this had the extra ingredient added.
The positive thing about this is that I have lost four pounds this week. Hopefully, the antibiotic prescribed for the other problem will take care of it. Nothing tastes right, including my beloved coffee.
Maryanne--The procedure has been rescheduled for March 14. I'll have to find someone who doesn't work on that day to take me to the procedure as the person who was taking me works on that day. It is a pain to have these types of procedures done so far away but there is no choice. It is one of the "benefits" of living in the boonies. A three-hour round trip is the norm for about everything, including groceries which are so much cheaper as well as gas, etc I had Amazon to deliver my cat's 25lb. of cat litter as it was cheaper than at the local place, plus it came to the door and I didn't have to carry it from the car to the house.
This is a pic of the eyes two days after treatment started. Before that, the eyes were more swollen, runny, and would glue shut when sleeping. This pic doesn't show the eyes at their worst.

Jean..That looks so painful. I can't imagine it worse that that. I try to read ingredients religiously because DH has Celiac and can't eat any gluten. Sometimes manufacturers will change ingredients of a product we'd been buying for years and it might now have a gluten substance in it. At least you got the benefit of a weight loss out of it. I hope you can find someone else to drive you to the test. When I drove my friend to her's, they had to actually see me before they were take her in. I guess they'd had instance of a person saying they had a driver when they didn't. I guess they can't be too careful with the ways people file sue for any little thing.0
-
Jean - ouch!! But I'm glad you figured out the source so you can avoid it. I always have my litter delivered (usually petfooddirect.com) and much of the cat food (except the dry now that they are on a prescription diet food - little chubbies that they are they have joined me on the diet food).
I've been playing on ancestry.com the last couple hours. I really should be doing something else!

I gave up Candy Crush for Lent. I'm kind of addicted to it so I figured it would be more of a sacrifice than giving up real candy. I don't get much rel candy anymore anyway. So far, I'm 4 days in and holding strong.0
-
Ouch, Jean! I'm glad you figured out what caused that reaction and I'm sure you'll be vigilant in the future to be sure you avoid it. I'm glad it's improving. That is a pain that you will have to find someone to drive you to your procedure, but I'm sure you must have a good network of friends who will help you.
Not much going on here today. A neighbor brought us Taco Soup and cornbread for dinner tonight, so we'll be having our romantic Valentine's dinner in a bit. Our friends and neighbors have been so good to us through this ordeal. I don't think I had ever met this neighbor before today, and she was kind enough to bring us dinner and write me a very nice note wishing me well. We've lived in this neighborhood for almost 22 years, and it's been a great place to live. At some point we will have to move when we can no longer manage the stairs, pool, etc., but we are in no hurry to leave.0 -
Pam--The Taco Soup and cornbread sound great. Yes, neighbors can be a great help. I'm so glad that you have had great help during your ordeal.
It is pouring the snow again...just as predicted. The interstate near the capitol city has been closed. Just another fun evening in "paradise." Some schools have already cancelled for tomorrow which was to have been a make up day for another snow day. Originally President's Day was to have been a day off but was changed to make up some of the days lost. It looks as if Spring break may be in danger of being lost again.0 -
Nearly every school system in our state is closed. The weather person who predicted this almost two weeks ago was right on the nose. We have a favorite forecaster that we all follow in our area as he is noted for his accuracy. We have a large rain moving in so we now have flood warnings issued for low lying areas.
I started the day with a Special K breakfast sandwich.
0 -
We have a light coating of snow here today. We are to get a little more snow, then ice, then rain. Ah, Maryland.....0
-
So sorry Jean and Maryanne about your weather! It seems like you are getting more than your fair share of cold temps, snow, and ice. I hope it eases up soon for you. We've had a pretty mild winter so far, with temps higher than normal for the most part. I think today our high is predicted to be 69 degrees. It is bright and sunny, so we might actually exceed that. Maybe you both need to move to Texas!
I just finished breakfast and now I'm waiting for my home health nurse to arrive to change my dressings on my foot and on my arm. The arm is done once a week, but the wound vacuum has to be changed three times a week. The other wound that is now off the vac is changed daily by DH. He also administers my IV antibiotic three times a day. No wonder he thinks he's a nurse now!
I can't wait for my foot to heal enough to get a pedicure! I know that should be the least of my worries right now, but the foot is looking more like a hoof than a foot at the moment. I can't believe how much dead skin I'm peeling off of it. Sadly, the other foot doesn't look much better. I pity the poor person who has to tackle these hooves of mine, when the time comes!0 -
Pam..What's the estimate on when you're completely healed? This has been such an ordeal for you. What wonderful neighbors you have. If you can't do the stairs when the time comes, you could always put in a stair lift. We put one in when MIL lived with us and I've had occasions such as when my knees were hurting that it came in handy for me.0
-
Helene, I don't have an estimate yet. I go back to the ortho doc on the 25th and he plans to x-ray it then, so perhaps at that appointment I'll have a better idea. I'm pretty sure that I'll have one more surgery in my future as he has said that he feels he will need to remove the hardware but wants to wait until the bones are back together. I hope to complete all phases of recovery this calendar year since we have had to pay our deductible twice already. The initial treatment occurred in 2015 and the ER visit that night triggered one deductible. Then in 2016 I've had two surgeries and an ER visit and that was another deductible. Our insurance is a private pay plan, and we chose a high deductible to keep the premiums affordable, but hadn't counted on having to pay it twice for the same injury. So if a third surgery is necessary, I want it done this year so we don't have to pay our deductible a third time for this one injury.0
