So many of the delicious fatty good y'all talk about are heavy in lactose. Aside from a lactose free/taking my lactose pills, any suggestions?

A few suggestions:
- Coconut oil
- cocoa butter
- bacon
- eggs
- meats, i.e. fatty brisket or steaks
- some cheeses are lower in lactose or are better tolerated by those who are lactose intolerant (i.e. goat or sheep)
- ghee is clarified butter, is amazing to cook with, and is tolerated better by people with lactose intolerance due to only having trace amounts of lactose
- nuts
- nut butters (without added sugars)
I can think of all sorts of fatty goodness, let me know if you want me to keep going. I have a bit of a lactose issue that's new due to a medicine I'm on...so I've had to adjust things a bit.0 -
Same issue here. I am assuming you live in the States. I live in Canada and travel to the states often. I do find that there are a lot more lactose free products here in Canada than in the states, even in health food stores. I suspect each store manager has a great deal of latitude in what he buys.
I can get lactose free: whipping cream, coffee cream, full fat sour cream, cottage cheese, plain yogurt with low sugar, all milks (skim, 1%, 2% and homo), Gouda cheese, smoked Gouda cheese, and if you add in artificial sugar products 4 choices of ice cream at my local store. The town is a population of less than 2,000 people and basically closes up in the winter, and these items are still commonly available.
I can eat goat so that adds: cream cheese (6 flavours), cheddar and mozzarella but I sometimes have to shop at another town of 4,000. The big city (100,000) an hour away provide a health food store with lots of other choices on occasion.
If I find myself wanting something, I check the brands that are in the store, check their website and, if there is a lactose free version, I ask the manager to order it. The only time they won't is if they don't stock the brand.
I have also found that after 5 months on this WOE that I am less intolerant than I was, not hugely, but if a tablespoon of something slips in, it is not a major issue. With more fat in my diet, lactose seems easier to digest.
keep asking your store manager. I bring the printout from the website to give them. They are often surprised by demand. Lactose free plain full fat, low sugar yogurt flies off the shelves around here. And keep eating your fat!

Goat milk products (cheese, yogurt, milk, etc.) and A2 Milk are often tolerated fairly well by those who are lactose intolerant.0

I'm in Canada too, eh!
Thanks for so much information. I feel like I'll need to spend an extra dollar or two and go for the goat's option. But I admittedly haven't looked (too hard) for the other lactose free things.
Awesome insight folks. Thank you!0 -
Seeds like chia or flax are also options. Plenty of chia seed pudding recipes here and on the net. I am a big fan of coconut oil, coconut milk and unsweetened almond milk. Lots of recipes for low carb breads n muffins have either almond or coconut flour. All fit your low lactose needs. Good luck.0

I skip most dairy. I'll get whipping cream sometimes but I usually pay for later. Cheese is the one place I splurge in dairy. Love my cheeses, and happily hard cheese doesn't have much if any lactose.0

A couple of lactose free brands to look for in Canada.
HWC (or any other milk:) Natrel (The others do not taste as good)
Sour Cream: Gay Lee
Cottage Cheese: Nortica
Plain Yogurt: Biobest (only comes in large format - not lunch size)
Gouda Cheese: Anco (they do a swiss too) in the deli area as a rule
Goat Cheeses of all kinds: Woolrich - again deli area
Hope that helps.0 -

I don't know if you guys have Cabot, but it's one of our big cheese brands and is lactose free.0

I substitute coconut/almond milk for heavy whipping cream. I don't notice it's not cream. If I use the cream, I get a terrible stomach ache.0
