i brined some fish on Sunday the brine called for brown sugar.. I haven't had sugar in 5 months but thought just in a brine being you rinse it off would be ok but I've had a dandy of a tummy ache (ache and gas) for the last 2 mornings (had it again for lunch yesterday). I hate to throw it out but if that's what's causing this... Do you think it's from the fish?

Impossible to know. A lot of things can cause gas, including common, but not deadly, food pathogens.0

I would think that it must deposit sugar into the meat... Otherwise, why even put in the brine to begin with? Ya know? It has to right? Idk
The only time I had a little sugar from the sauce on the meat at an Asian buffet, even though I tried to get as little as humanly possible, I had a sick belly for like a day and a half! But, I'm sure I had waaaaaay more than you did from the brine.
It really seems like it should've been so little that it wouldn't have mattered... Could just be a coincidence. Or maybe something else that you're just not realizing cuz it isn't obvious...0 -
Yeah I'm sure some got into the meat but didn't know if yall had had tummy aches from gettin little sugar. If the sauce did hurt you then I bet that's what it is. I started feeling better yesterday afternoon then woke up this morning hurting again. Ugh and I love smoked salon!!0

Oh yes! Any sugar causes GI distress for me too! Is good to be in a place, nutritionally, to see this side effect! We aren't able to correlate symptoms with specific foods when eating carbage all the time! Sorry you felt bad!0

I eat smoked salmon often, though I avoid the ones that are like honey smoked or anything really sugary, but personally it never gives me any issues. I'm usually getting about 7 grams of sugar from my food most days, and the smoked salmon I buy has about 2 grams of sugar in the serving size I have. Just to share a frame of reference. It's possible that it was the fish itself that upset your stomach.0

Next time you make a recipe that calls for brown sugar, use "Just Like Sugar Brown."0 -
I went sugar free last summer. Over the holidays I made some cream cheese brownies for a party. I didn't eat a single piece, just licked my fingers and mixing spoons as I went along.
Oooh, unhappy tummy-tum. I wasn't sure whether to be annoyed or glad. Glad, I guess.0
