I wore motorcycle boots or work boots everyday from age 17 to 32. Never had an issue, but did not do too much regular walking. Had to switch to "office shoes" at some point after that for 8-12 hours a day. Took quite some time to get used to. Then over the last 3-4 years I switched to runners when not working or riding, also took getting used to.

I have never truly felt comfortable in any footwear other than stiff motorcycle boots. But I know from experience those are brutal for long walks :)
  • Back to being tired in the morning. Woke up, hit snooze twice. Would have smashed it a third except I stepped on the dog and his howl woke me right up.

1/2 way through my walk I felt as though I could have closed my eyes and sleepwalked that last couple km.

My fault, went to bed too late.

Shin splint is 100% gone, blister is 90% gone. So aside from being the walking dead this morning all is well with the world of walking. Have not commuted to/from work using a vehicle once since February 16. This is week 7. I have walked despite the pains, regardless of weather and turned down offers of rides simply. Nice!

Weather is at the point where I could switch to cycling everyday, and I might, but for now I am enjoying the walking.

I've also been short on sleep. Been trying to hit the sack between 8 and 9 pm but more often its 10 to 11. Getting up a 5 am sucks.

Glad to hear otherwise you're feeling better.
  • March was a decent month.

April, not so much. I did not commute to work at all in March, April just started and I have done it twice. Yesterday, the wife got me sick and I felt brutal all day. So I drove.

Today, I drove again. Feeling better, but today I have items to transport that are WAY to big to carry in a backpack. So rather than walking to/from work and then driving back to work to get the packages, I just drove.

Valid excuses, but still excuses. Not thrilled with myself, but moving on. Back to walking tomorrow.
  • Head cold plus allergies are making me a broken, beaten down zombie of a man. So much pressure in my head I steer clear of sharp objects.

No more driving to work, just walking. The crisp windy walk helped clear my head a bit, even if I did walk like I was a drunk staggering through the streets. Not an uncommon sight at 9 am in this area.

My wife is an allergy sufferer. Every time I sneeze she thinks its an allergic reaction. I do get stuffy at times but I think its just the shear volume of crap I inhale during a day.
  • Weekend off. Prefer walking but it cannot happen. Need to be a mobile parent taking mini me's to various places for set times while still getting to work on time. Life happens.

I have loads to do today, so will be very active, just no walking far.
  • April is a "light" month for walking. Drove everywhere last 4 days due to rain.
Finally back to walking today, feels like I was off for weeks. Glad to be walking again.
Been fighting off (and winning) some form of sinus/lung infection for a couple weeks and walking helps clear me up.

Did not just stop walking for 4 days. Stopped tracking too. Ate whatever, did not log. Just quick add 3500 calories so I have some data entered. A number I have only rarely made it to. Did not eat horribly (nor great), just did not track it.

Back on track today. Walking and logging. Even weighed out my food this morning to take it that extra step.
I normally just estimate the amounts I consume, or go by the label.

My estimating, it seems, is slightly off. For the better. My breakfast this morning, was weighed to the amount I usually estimated I consumed and was actually more than normal. My estimates were higher than actual. I have been eating less calories for breakfast than I log.

Except with the bread. I normally log what is on the package. 1 slice is XX calories etc. Today I weighed it out and it was off. 4 slices was about 80 calories more than what the package said when counting by gram. What I would have gained at breakfast by being off was lost at lunch.
  • Trade show season has returned. Next three days all walking I can do will be in a 3x12 space. :/

April was a slack month, as expected. May is when life really ramps up restricting free time.

Walked only 170km in April. Down from 240+ in March.

Going to switch to cycling for May to save myself 40+ minutes a day. But hope to do 2 long rides a week of at least an extra 20-30 km each day.

Cycling goal for May is at least 450km plus any walking I can do.

    Good plan.
  • Participated in a cycling event this weekend. 170km over 2 days (85 km each way). Fought a strong wind the entire way the first day, just barely made it. Second day, wind changed direction after the first 20 km and had to ride into it again. By the 140km mark I was done. My knees were killing me and I could not go another km, let along another 30. Mother nature can kiss my shiny metal *kitten*.

In truth, the wind is only partly to blame for my failure to complete.

    1) I'm an idiot. I did not start training for this until about 3 weeks ago. This was the main factor.
    2) My bike is a tank, not a road bike. Does awesome on trails, not so much on long flat stretches of pavement. You stop peddling, you stop moving real fast. No coasting allowed on this heavyweight bike.
    3) Despite being an avid camper, I did not properly prepare for camping over night. Figured it was summer, and a tent and light blanket would be fine. Hell NO! We were camping near a lake, AND it was poor weather. Was so cold I only got 2 hours sleep the whole night.

Despite all of my failings in proper preparation, still impressed I made it as far as I did. All for the sake of charity.

IF I am stupid enough to try this again next year, I will make a point of remembering this first outing and planning ahead.
  • And back to walking to/from work every day. Started last week of November.
Seems WAY easier getting back to walking, no pains and lots of energy. Even on days when I am not going to work, I still walk. Kids go sledding at the park, I go walking. I look forward to my walks. Lots of music and cool audio books, so total win for me.

Loads of energy too. Spent 3+ hours shovelling snow and was not even a bit tired and went looking for more. Unusual.
  • In 2016 I cycled 1,103 km and walked 1,028 km. Nice.
  • January was a good mobile month. Regardless of weather conditions or sickness, I got up, got out and moved.

    34,059 Calories burned.
    271 Kilometers walked.
    52:57:45 Hours.

  • February was not a great month. Missed a few days of walking, and made little effort to walk much more than my normal commute.

    189 km walked
    36 hours, 40 minutes
    24,000 calories burned
  • March was slack. Most Saturdays I drove to work instead of walked. Plus had a few days off where I did no walking. Did a bit of cycling though, so probably why the distance is a little higher than last month.
