i found that I could add a food to MYFOODS that I call sugar alcohols. I put in ZERO calories, etc and put a MINUS 1 in the carb. Yep, that is right. -1 so If I have 6 sugar alcohols, I put in 6 servings on my food diary and it shows up as a -6 in the carb column. whooooopeeee. I found out it works on the computer version of mfp, but on my android version, the negative does not show up. but at least the item shows up with the '6' serviings so I can remember to subtract the 6 sugar alcohols.

I posted in regualr forums but I guess no low carbers saw it as no one seemed to notice. Or maybe yall already knew this and I am just 'slow' lol.

Thanks for the tip. I don't eat too much stuff with sugar alcohols, but I will keep this in mind.

    Nice!
I usually make a special food and identify it as "net carbs - fiber and sugar alcohol removed". I'll have to play with this method and compare!

I LOVE erythritol and stevia blends as a sweetener (like Z sweet). I don't get how people will defend sugar as a "natural" product and villify sweeteners at the same time. Erythritol is just as natural.

I wouldn't have thought to try a negative number. Here's a thought also. You could do something like this to creat net carbs. Create a food with -1 for carbs and zero calories. Call this the "Net Carb Food". Then at the end of the total up your fiber and sugar Alcohols. However many of those that you have, you'd enter up in as the servings for the "Net Carb Food". I'm going to give it a try!

OK. Smart peeps of MFP. We all know to get net carbs you subtract fiber (and some also do sugar alcohols). Let's say for example, that you have a food with 10 g carbs and 5 fiber. No protein or fat, just to make it simple. There are 4 calories for g of carb, so this would have 40 calories - but half of those are from fiber, which we are saying doesnt absorb. there would only be 5 net carbs, and I think, 20 true calories. Basically - If I subtract off the fiber, don't I also need to subtract off the calories related to the fiber?

So assuming this is true, my special food - I'm calling the "Net Carb Factor" should have: -1 g Carbs, and -4 Calories. Everything else would be zero. Then you would add this food in with the number of servings equalling the total of the fiber and sugar alcohols.

I am so excited about this! So, so cool, Scubana7!!!!

OK. A little disappointed. The app takes the negatives and turns them to zeroes. So you actually see different numbers for calories and carbs on the app vs the website when you do this. I was so psyched about getting my net carb pie chart!

it works on the computer but does not on my phone app.

Also I am just subtracting the sugar alcohols if I have an atkins bar or something. I don't want to subtract my fiber yet because I want to see my total fiber to be sure I am getting enough. So in the carb column, i just subtract the sugar alcohols and leave the fiber in. I then just mentally subtract the fiber to get my net carbs. but at least the sugar alcohols arent in my total carb. There is no other way to tract those.
