My friend is malay chinese and a frequent frustrated dieter. She loves social food n wine. Her doctor told her that she needs to lower bad cholestorol and her glucose levels in last 2 tests (3 mths apart) indicate pre diabetes. High fat freaks her out due to cholestorol.

The doc suggested no startch n no sugars (low GI). I would love to point her to modern credible research that wont have her freaking over high fat whilst low carb.

Any suggestions of encouraging sites, useful tools or recipes. That may appeal to a tomorrow dieter who fears fat Thxs.

There's not a lot of evidence for the high-fat aspect of the diet. The low-carb aspect will definitely improve triglyceride levels.

The high-fat aspect is probably neutral. One interesting finding is that LCHF can actually give you lower levels of saturated fat in the blood than restricting dietary fat.

BTW, I really like that study because it also gives a dose-response effect of various carb intake levels. Volek doesn't state it explicitly, but if you do the math, there's no correlation between ketone levels and weight loss. That suggests to me that the primary power of low-carb is in the appetite suppression effects.

Sounds familiar, same thing I heard from my doctor two weeks ago and he was less concerned about the bad cholesterol than about the prediabetes, as those numbers will come down together with weight loss from low carb. We didn't however discuss the high fat side of it. Following for more info.

I'm searching for a certain study and not finding it. There are plenty of them that show low-carb will benefit "pre-diabetes" and various health markers, but the one I'm looking for used olive oil as the primary fat, and it's one of the few that showed a strong reduction of LDL.

    I'll keep looking. :)

The gist, though, is that not all fats are created equal. Some are just plain bad (trans-fat), others will raise LDL, and others will lower it. Some, like the short- and medium-chain SFAs may have additional magical powers. :)

    Ah, I finally found it:
Long Term Effects of Ketogenic Diet in Obese Subjects with High Cholesterol Level

All 66 subjects received a ketogenic diet consisting of less than 20 g of carbohydrates in the form of green vegetables and salad and 80–100 g of proteins in the form of meat, fish, fowl, eggs, shellfish and cheese. Polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats (5 tablespoons olive oil) were included in the diet. Gradually, the amount of carbohydrate is raised from the original 20 to 40 g in order to supply sufficient glucose to sustain the cells with few or no mitochondria such as erythrocytes, cornea, lens, renal medulla and leukocytes.

The level of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides and blood glucose level decreased significantly, whereas HDL cholesterol increased significantly after the treatment in both groups.

The show FatHead is a good introduction to LCHF. It is especially if they have seen Super Size Me.

Cholesterol Clarity is a good easy read. The Great Cholesterol Myth is another good book.

Dr Bernstein's Diabetes Solution is a god book on why LCHF helps diabetics.

Peter Attia's blogs are good but technical. Same with Dr Jason Fung's youtube lectures on obesity and diabetes.

Taubes' books are god for explaining how we started thinking fat is bad. Yudkin's Pure White and Deadly is a good read too.

This is kind of cool. It's a letter to the editor of the British Journal of Nutrition explaining why you shouldn't use LDL as a marker for low-carb's health benefits:

The authors would like to apologise to steak and butter, and welcome them back to the dinner table.
