Unquenchable thirst

Last question this month, I promise!! Since I found this board, I've been shooting off questions as if this board was going out of business.

I was super thirsty for a day in my 2nd week, but now that I'm in my 4th, I've had this incredible thirst and cotton mouth that won't go away. I drank 60oz of water in the morning alone. It's been 2 days and I'm guzzling back liquids like nobody's business. My diet hasn't changed except for having reduced my veggies a bit. I'm also a bit woozy...not in a bad way, but in a happy buzzed sort of way, and yet, I've had none of those fun lovin' chemicals.

Any idea when this phase will go away? I've been spending more time with my washroom than I do with my husband.

    Are you getting enough sodium?

I'm pretty sure I am although I could be wrong. I'm not usually far under or over on MFP. It's set to 2300. I'm drinking broth, salting my foods. Haven't changed my salt intake since I began 4 weeks ago.

How low carb are you? 2300 is recommended on a standard diet. When lc or bodies dump sodium when we deplete the glycogen stores, we also don't retain water like higher carb eaters. You may want to try increasing that and see if it helps.

Your body needs sodium! The woozy, buzzed feeling is from your electrolytes getting out of whack. Keeping track of how much you get is needed because anywhere from 3000-5000mg of sodium is needed, everyday. The ketones, produced by burning fat, are excreted via the urine. On the way out they take salt with them, and by as much bathroom time you describe, your thirst is from needed sodium. Best ways for some now sodium, salted broth, pickles/pickle juice, pork skins, and long term you might want to consider tablets (if you aren't able to eat enough). I'm almost a year keto and still require 4000mg a day to feel best.

Just know that this isn't extra salt intake! It's only needed to replace what your body loses through burning fat!

Once you're feeling bad, the magnesium can also be low which will need supplementing too. The best ones to choose would be the citrate, glycinate, and there's another "ate" I can't think of. Stick with one of these types since they absorb the best. Do not get magnesium oxide! Is a waste of money for what we need it for! I take a magnesium citrate 400mg capsule, two times a day.

Getting your electrolytes in balance will help you! Good luck with this!

Remember, too, @workathomemama, that you go through different stages of "adaption" and with each stage change, your water/sodium/electrolytes, food choices/macros, all that will fluctuate. Tweak little thinks like sodium. It will level out.
