Cholesterol Question

Okay, so I've been Keto for 2 years now. I'm female, 32kg less than I was at my heaviest (still 19kg overweight). At least I'm overweight now and not obese.

In this time I've had a few blood tests for other unrelated issues, and they have all come back perfect, except for one thing.

The last two times (mid last year, and a week ago) my good cholesterol has been low, and my bad cholesterol has been high (6.2). At 6.5 the Dr says I would HAVE to go on medication. I have argued the point and told her I don't want medication, but 2 different Drs have been adamant.

My question is, why is this the case, and should I be concerned about it? I'm 41, and in good overall health. I eat "good" fats, but I'm continually told by various Drs that "low carb is fine, but watch your fats" which in my experience means lean protein, which is not healthy and will lead to starvation.

Anyone want to weigh in on this with actual knowledge/articles?

thx xx

First, it's a very common result to see LDL go up on low-carb. Volek even quipped that all of the elite athletes in his low-carb study would be put on statins by a conventional doc.

6.2 mmol is not outrageously high. I would find a smarter doc who will order further tests. You want to know the nature of the LDL. In the US, VAP and NMR tests will give a detailed breakdown. Low-carb changes the pattern of LDL to the less atherogenic type.

All that said, you can probably reduce LDL by reducing saturated fat intake. Use olive oil instead of coconut oil or butter, for example.

Good article here by someone who was freaked out by their tests after going low carb:
