Elimination Diet?

So this has been a tough week. I have been doing good at staying under 50g carbs daily, however I feel more often than not bloated and uncomfortable in my clothes… ug. It is usually not so bad first thing in the morning, but by noon I feel 5 months prego. The next morning it starts all over again. There must be a trigger food(s) causing this. On the list of suspects are eggs, dairy, nuts (almonds and cashews), onions, pickles (surely not), and some artificial sweetener. I did have a few tablespoons of hummus yesterday… also on the list.

Has anyone tried and had success with a short-term elimination diet? I am thinking either an egg fast, or a meat fast for 3 days to see if it would help. Then adding items from the list of suspects in one by one and see how it goes...

If anyone has other ideas please share :)

I'd probably start by removing the artificial sweetener. And see how you feel. Many of those can cause digestive discomfort and bloating.

Yes, very well might be the sweetener. Thanks for the insight!

I've noticed over the past several years that onions have been causing increasingly more bloating and GI upset for me. I also sometimes have problems with nuts, but I haven't pinpointed when or what specifically, so I suspect it may have something to do with improperly stored nuts. Legumes are also notoriously a problem for me. The AS is a common culprit for others, but I don't use it enough to have noticed problems other than headaches with certain ones (most notably aspartame).

Thanks Mami! I often cook with onions, so that could be it. I bought a ton of nuts at the grocery earlier this week and they have been on the counter where by boys can snack freely. I think I've been into them too much.

Ok, just got out of a lunch meeting at work and I am in gastro pain! I had roast beef deli meat, a slice of Swiss cheese, and a Cesar salad, and water. I ditched the sliced bread and Crutons. I would pack it up and leave early if not for an afternoon meeting. At least it's a conference call as I am at my desk with my jeans unbuttoned. Maybe I'll go on a water fast tomorrow...

I would start with eliminating sweetener. Cashews can also cause bloating. I do not get bloating with this way of eating, providing I have enough magnessium in my diet. Egg fast would certainly show up if it is the eggs!! Good luck. Love to hear what you learn.

If you do a fast, I recommend a meat one, ideally beef. Stick to beef and water for a while (it's okay to do indefinitely, so I'd say to it until the symptoms go away), then slowly add things back in. Eggs are a common sensitivity culprit, and beef is supposedly the most easily digestible food/meat and least likely to be a problem.

Good point! I am thinking meat fast too. I have upped egg consumption lately so that could be it. If I can get hubby to BBQ a tri tip this weekend I should be in food for several days! Ribeye sounds amazing too!
