I will have 1 on occasion. I've been very good at being able to "moderate" myself on sugar free candy. Sometimes I have a piece just to test if I can be satisfied with just one.
I'm not carb sensitive like someone with insulin resistance, so other than potentially creating some cravings, they don't seem to give me any trouble in the amount I eat.
I think they could be trouble if portion isn't controlled or affect blood sugar. So just keep that in mind.
I just keep these things to a rare treat. I need to think of all sweets that way. Especially candy since that has always been my kryptonite.0 -
I eat sugar free candies and I have ir they don't trigger cravings for me, probably because they are small. Keep in mind isomalt can cause gi upset so be careful.0

It seems like what is or isn't a problem varies so much from one person to the next.
It's another one of those "try it and see if it's ok for you" things.0 -
Just had one and wow sweet.... But good!!0

Yes exactly0 -
I have the sugar free coffee caramels at my desk for a random mid afternoon treat but they are very sweet. I generally though steer away from sugar free candy, cookies and ice cream as I am still new to keto and don't want to risk throwing myself off.0

I have used them in the past. Haven't dared to try them in the last 6 weeks since I've been keeping carbs under 75 g a day. Had half a square of 86% dark chocolate today cause it's my birthday. We'll see how that goes. I gave the rest of the bar to my sister to hold for me "cause I can't be trusted". Lol0

I don't guess I'm IR I don't know how to tell never looked into it. @klkateri I don't blame you if I was just starting I wouldn't dare!!! I've been very strict with my weight loss but now I'm on the last 6 or so lbs and I'm starting to experiment and learn more about how to maintain.
Even before my diet I was like a once a month sweet eater (unless it was Reece's miniatures and the whole bag would be gone in a day or 2) I think I can handle the sweet end but I don't like cravings so if it causes cravings (for just food in general) I'll have to skip the sweets unless a special occasions.

I would prefer to spend the carbs on berries. Equally sweet, no list of ingredients. Something that grows on bushes has to be better for my body than something that comes from a factory.
Plus, I know I can control the amount of berries, I'm not so sure about candy. The ingredients may look ok-ish but the manufacturers employ very smart people to make sure that we keep eating and reaching for more. Very slippery slope for me...

If I splurge on candy, it's likely going to be the real thing. I find I can actually have a fairly wide range of chocolate based candies within my carb count. I would never have imagined I could have an entire Godiva Truffle (about 18 grams net carbs - my 3 hours limit is 20). I had a couple at Christmas with no impact at all on my blood glucoseSpread them out over the day, and make sure they don't overlap with other carbs, and Mmmmmh!

Really? I have never studied spacing food out like that... Very interesting0

I spread it out specifically to control blood sugar. I also check my blood glucose before I want to eat something I know might push my personal limit - and if it is high enough the expected spike would push it over 140, I down an ounce of almonds, wait 30 minutes and check again (they pretty reliably drop my blood glucose by about 20 points).
I've also discovered that the liver has a one-track mind, so if I have a glass of wine it turns off the background pumping of glucose into the bloodstream until it is done thinking about the alcohol. The background level seems to be the equivalent of consuming 20-30 carbs - which gives me a carb tolerance of 40-50 grams until the liver returns to adding glucose to the bloodstream. So far, taking advantage of that is purely hypothetical. But I expect to take advantage of it occasionally, perhaps on my anniversary in September so I can enjoy a nice piece of bread during our celebratory dinner! That line of exploration was triggered by my doctor being puzzled about how little I reacted to the two glasses of wine in my blood glucose log for October and November, followed by an experiment a few weeks ago in which I had a very sweet wine that actually lowered my blood glucose. I scurried around doing research, then over the next 3 days experimented with the remainder of the bottle to test my theory. I see my doc on Friday - gonna 'splain liver function to him(maybe it will distract him from the statin conversation he wants to have with me . . . although I'm hoping the dramatic diet change and weight loss will make that a moot point.)
I'm working it, the way I always do when I get a new diagnosis. The more I know - generally, and specific to my body - the more comfortable I feel with my new reality. Once I get diabetes done to death, my Hashimoto's thyroiditis (simultaneous diagnosis) is on deck.0 -
Very interesting... I will look more in to that.
Back to the candy everyone I ended up having 2 pieces of the 5 pieces serving and it has triggered cravings.... I put them away and I won't cave in to have more I will just suffer threw but that will for sure be a very rare thing for me! I'm wondering now (I think I know the answer) if berries will cause cravings too?!? I guess I have learned my lesson on worthers lol0 -
I have sugar free whethers and some sugar free Russell stover candies but I don't have a whole serving. I'll have one of each kind to mix it up throughout the day. I also love all the almond flavors of right now, salt and vinegar and habanero BBQ.0

Berries dont trigger cravings for me. Artificial sweeteners I think make me abnormally really hungry.
I Suspect that I have a cashew nut monster lurking within me. Un checked she'd rear her ugly head and inhale whatever pack of cashews is available. No need for them, nor a craving, just difficult to stop once I start.
Before this WOE I could eat one choc or candy and put the pack away so I suspect I could still do that now.0 -
I don't touch them. They're a trigger for me.0

Berries make me want to EAT ALL THE BERRIES on the planet, not just in my fridge. Tread carefully. Even pairing them with 3 times as many fat grams as carbs doesn't cut that urge by much. And that can happen with as little as one berry for me, @ettaterrell .... Just FYI. But I am insulin resistant.
FYI, some of the signs are feeling like you have to have something sweet to wrap up a big meal, feeling hungry after having eaten huge amounts if the mean included any measureable carbs, etc. You can have IR without any huge red flag signs, but even little things add up!0 -
Well, it's 5 pieces in a serving. So one piece is 3g carbs. Sounds fine to me.0

Really berries don't? I just felt sugar was sugar and it would give me cravings... I will try some and see then. Thanks!0 -
I don't think I'm IR but I will just try a few in a couple weeks and see how it goes for my cravings.
