Training for a 5k, but don't want to do too much cardio...

Ok, so all the research I've done indicates that I need to focus on strength training and building muscle, and show only be doing minimal low intensity cardio.

I'm whats known as "skinny fat"; technically I'm small, but I'm out of shape. I have a high body fat % and very little muscle. So they say when people like me focus on cardio, our bodies break down what little muscle we have for energy. So we're suppose to just do lots of strength training to build muscle and avoid cardio, especially high intensity cardio.

Is it possible to train for a 5k (it's in less than 2 months) at a very low intensity? Would it work?

Well... what is your goal? Yes, I think this is doable, though I am no expert. You could train for the 5K 3X per week and weight train 2X per week, making sure to take in plenty of protein in your diet. When you go to the gym to lift, leave dainty at the door. You don't have to lift more than that unless you just want to, but when you do, get mean and lift real weights (while still using proper form). That's what builds muscle.

I think that the people who say that are crazy and don't have good research to support them.

Run and lift. It's good for you.

hmmm...you have been reading to much bro' science, imho. ;o)

It really depends on your objective..is it just to finish or are you going for a time. If it's the former, than low intensity runs probably will work. The latter requires some faster efforts from time to time. Cardio does not break down muscle. The "supposed" to's you are listening to are wrong.

    good luck!
