Alcohol

I set a 1,500 calorie goal and I'm low carb obviously. I probably teeter between 20-50g per day, but more on the lower end of the spectrum.

Will alcohol hinder my progress if I stay under my calorie goal and use mixers without carbs. I stick to vodka (no carbs).

I'm going to weigh myself on Tuesday to see if it has impeded any weight loss (7 days since my previous weigh-in) but since it's the weekend I want to be prepared and adjust accordingly.

I think if you consume alcohol, your body works on burning that off first.

I don't think you are going to gain any weight for drinking vodka and club soda (or whatever you choose to drink), but watch out for your alcohol tolerance lowering. That has happened to me and others have reported that as well.

Doesn't take as much to get inebriated pretty quickly after becoming ketogenic! Warning to go slowly, and see how you react to it! But vodka with a low/no carb mix is the best choice!

That is true. Alcohol works very much like sugar from a metabolic point of view, so limit it or you'll be out of keto fast. I gave up all booze but will likely add it back in once I achieve my health goals and am in maintenance mode, but not before. I used to drink 1-2 bottles of wine per day, so I don't trust myself either.

Remember that alcohol also lowers your inhibitions so you may be tempted to cheat while you have a buzz.

I remember that I got extremely tipsy (off 2 glasses of wine lol) and begged my boyfriend to take me to McDonalds for nuggets. Thank god he didn't listen.

Perhaps eat something before you drink to slow the absorption of alcohol?

Alcohol - any amount - stalls me  But sometimes you really need dirty vodka martini with lots of olives...

Try to drink a glass of water between alcoholic drinks, it will decrease the chance of dehydration from the alcohol too!

Yeah, my tolerance is WAY lower. I drink vodka usually with a diet soda a couple of times a month. It hasn't stopped my progress, but unsure how much it may slow it down.

Lol. I had about 1-2 oz of red wine last night before dinner and it made me so sleepy that I fell asleep on the couch and had to be wakened to eat dinner. Cheap drunk!

I get tiddly after 2 glasses of wine, but I've always been like this :open_mouth: I drink so rarely that it affects me quickly, plus my husband loves that I'm a cheap drunk

    This is fantastic advice!
And if you drink too much, if you can remember to get some salt before bed it will help a lot. Or first thing in the morning...
    Speaking from experience here! Lol

Any time you consume alcohol, your body's fat burning process comes to a halt for 48-72 hours. A very high price to pay if you are trying to lose fat. Your liver works overtime to clear the toxin, and until that is complete, the Liver will not burn fat.

Splurge on premium vodka (like Grey Goose). Tastes better & no headache or hangover later!

It's only 10am on a Saturday morning and a drink sounds good. In 9 months only had vodca & soda 3tmes and wine twice. I normally had only a few drinks once a week but love the social aspect of a drink.

HOWEVER since being LC I now have just soda water with fresh limes so it looks fancy when I go out and find it really meets my needs for socialising. I don't drink it at home on purpose so it is my treat when out. Oh how easy it is to convince myself of something when I'm focused and encouraged. It has only taken 9 months of making many changes every day, day in day out. Thanks for me realising how far I've come.

Drinking tends to dehydrate me extremely now. And even drinking good quality stuff will not save you from the unique pain that is a keto hangover. Drink extra water and sodium to try to prevent that.

I wish that was the case for me! My tolerance hasn't decreased at all! At least, I don't think it has, and I haven't walked off the balcony (yet)...
