This surgery has been on and off my mind for over 10 years now. I have been talking with a few friends who have had it done and a few who are going thought the process of it now. I lost 70lbs back in 2014 but gained all but 10lbs back. I am back at it again to try and get it off but the surgery is on my mind again, Now I know that is no quick fix, it will still take hard work and watching what I am eating but I don't know if anyone else has thought of getting it done? I am so scared of something happening or having complication and I'm such a chicken when it comes to anything painful. I just want to hear what others have to say because I have talk to people, watched youtube videos and I still just don't know and would love some input. thanks

I thought about having it done as well but decided not to go through with it. I know a few people who have had it done. A couple of them have had success with it and others not so much. One friend didn't lose any weight at all because they continued to eat the same way even though it made them sick to do so. They didn't stick to their doctors instructions.

Another friend almost died on the table during their surgery. I'm just not willing to go through all of that. My gallbladder surgery last October made me well aware of the changes I needed to make. I am doing a good enough job taking the weight off nice and slow. I don't need that quick fix. But in the end, you have to do what is best for you. We are all here to support you no matter what you decide. I hope this helped.

Skittles its so frustrating to gain weight back when we did so good. I hope you find the path best suited to you! i think it's always on our minds. I recently decided to go on the waiting list here for wls to be paid for by my healthcare. Its about a two year wait so i figure that gives me time to do things on my own or if i fail to see a doctor

Hi Skittles -- I have not opted for WLS for a whole bunch of reasons. But many of those reasons are very specific to my own health concerns. As @bevkidd1 says, you need to do what's right for you and we're here to support you whatever you decide. The folks I've seen who have had the most success are those who understand WLS is only a tool and who work both before and after with nutritionists, psychologists, etc. to change their habits, emotional eating patterns, etc. Others I know who didn't put that work in gained the weight back.

Not sure where you live, but more and more physicians are specializing in treating obesity. If you are in the U.S., you might want to check out the American Board of Obesity Medicine website -- ABOM.org. This is the body that certifies physicians as obesity specialists. You'll see a link to "Diplomate Directory," which lists by geographic area every board-certified obesity specialist. One of these experts (Dr. Scott Kahan) has helped me take off 110 pounds.

Keep us posted on what you decide!

Where is he located, n how did he help? Went on the site, found names but couldn't get information on the doctors. I did intense ED rehab , over 50% were people that had WLS n gained back. Gayle Minneapolis

Hi Gayle -- My doctor is Scott Kahan, the Director of the National Center for Weight and Wellness (NCWW) in Washington DC. His practice takes a 360 degree approach to treating obesity by providing medical, psychological, exercise, and nutritional support. He first helped me reorder my eating, which boosted my metabolism a tad and my energy. He has been able to explain the disease to me as I've moved through my weight loss (like when I became ravenously hungry after losing the first 30-40 lbs) and reassured me through rough patches. The psychological support (both cognitive behavioral therapy and standard psychological treatment) has also been invaluable. Lately, we've been discussing whether I should try one of the newer obesity medications since my weight loss has stopped and I still have more I want to lose. But I think most of all, NCWW has provided me with a completely nonjudgmental atmosphere that has allowed for real change. They understand what it's like to live with obesity and don't blame or shame their patients in any manner.

Scott is very well connected with the obesity community and is on the ABOM board at the moment. So if you see someone you're interested in, send me a private message and I'd be happy to see if he can provide any additional info. (I'm sure he'll be honest with me.) -- Patty

Wow! Thanks for the information, you have done so well. Yes I'm interested, don't have a preference, whoever he would recommend in Minneapolis/st Paul Minnesota. I really don't know any of these doctors listed, would like his advice. The whole thing is normalizing eating, sounds easy but it's not! Thanks again for sharing. Are u going to pigeon TN , hope to meet you! Where do you live, is it in DC area?? Gayle Minneapolis

Unfortunately, I won't be going to Pigeon Forge. I live in Alexandria, Virginia, just outside of D.C. I'll see what I can find out about an obesity specialist in Minnesota for you!
