Big breakfast...

Not really big, but I'm guessing high in sugar?
2 Shredded wheat biscuits, banana and 8oz milk, roughly between cereal and coffee.
Two hours later, BG 17.5 ( 315) No that's not a mistake. I took it twice. The second time actually was 19 something.
So, I went for a 50 minute walk in the forest (saw a beautiful male cardinal).
When I got home, re-checked my blood sugar - 6.6 (118.8)
So, a couple of things crossed my mind:
1) Are bananas really that high in sugar to raise my blood sugar that high?
2) Was I too heavy on the carbs from the cereal?
3) My fasting this morning was high 8.4 (151.2), would that have made it so high after eating?
4) A 9 pt drop just from exercising?
And, just another general question out there:
I've been trying really hard to get more protein, eating greek yogurt, having eggs more often, meat at least once a day, but I'm also trying to keep my fat intake low.
Any advice oh wise ones?

So I am thinking the overall carb and sugar count was the problem. I have to be careful about fruits. I think we may have discussed this on another thread. This menu has starch in the cereal, sugar in the banana and sugar in the milk. And it would have been light on protein. So it may just be a combo that your system cannot handle easily. I have stopped eating bananas with cereal. I might have it with some cheese or egg whites. If I have cereal I might pick berries with it.
I enjoy beef, chicken and cheese so much I don't seem to have a problem getting protein. To keep the fat reasonable I do use low fat milk, mostly egg whites not yolks.0 -

That's 70g of carbs for breakfast with 8g of fiber and only 11g of protein and 3g of fat (I based it on 1%milk)...I can't come close to 70g of carbs in one meal unless it's an "occasion" and a one off...this is just a regular breakfast.
The other thing Is that although I love them, I only eat 1/2 a banana probably a week. For my blood sugar sake I stick to berries, apples and sometimes grapefruit. Apples (1/2 at a time unless they are small)
This might be helpful to you...I try and strive for no more than 45 carbs per meal..I know it's different for everyone but if you load up with carbs without much protein and healthy fat even with lots of fiber for me I would probably spike like you did.
For that breakfast I would eat 1 biscuit, 1/2 banana, 1%milk and have egg and avocado on a piece of wholewheat toast. And I would change the banana to blueberries. Then my blood sugar would be more stable...like I say you might react completely different but I would try and eat more protein and healthy fat with along with the cereal...
I think in response to the sugar, lots of insulin was released and therefore drove your sugar down. I notice that if I am too carby, my BS will go higher and then drop lower...
It's such a complex and individual disease...so much experimenting to find the foods you really can't tolerate...the worst for me are pizza, pasta and rice and bananas lol!!
At least it came down. My recommend is to eat less carbs and try for the same amount at each meal...along with the protein and whatever fat you can have...you should bring it up to the dietician....0 -
I forgot to say that I base my carbs upon total carbs that MFP will total and I don't subtract fiber. For me, I ate too many carbs that way and my bs was quite high at the beginning. As soon I started counting total carbs and kept it (in the beginning) at approx 35 per meal my bs started getting better and I felt better. I told my doctor, he was fine with it but my dietician was not that thrilled and thought I should eat more carbs but I told her I wasn't going to because I wanted to get my numbers down. I suppose I could have done more exercise and eaten more carbs but at the beginning, most of us were way overweight and unable to do a ton of vigorous exercise to try and control the sugar...anyhow, everyone has to do what works for them. If I had eaten what the CDA recommended at first my numbers would have been way higher. Now I have lost 72 lbs I eat more or less what they recommend..on the low side
Of the carbs tho and I don't snack as much.0 -
Thanks so much for your advice. I only use skim milk, so the total carbs was 64 - 9 grams of fibre. I was going with my old way of thinking, breakfast like making, lunch like a queen, and supper like a pauper. That's not going to work for blood sugar I guess. I can't have grapefruit because of Lipitor. I think I should have another visit with the dietician. Today's fasting was better too.0

If I have more than 20 g of carbs at a time ( meal or snack) my BG goes through up quite a bit. Had 1/4 c oatmeal this morning with1 tsp dried cranberries , 1tsp unsweetened coconut, and whole milk. Sent my BG up 20 points, from 97 to 117 Highest it's been for weeks. Been doing low carb (60-80g) a day for about 3 months. Lost over 31lbs. I guess I just can't handle that many carbs at once.0

Oop. Trying to comment to Jan96L:
Your numbers sound pretty good based on what guidelines I have been given recently. My doc would like a 20 point spread pre-meal to (2 hours) post-meal. He doesn't want to see near 30. If I get those I will need to take a little more pre-meal insulation.0
