I have been wanting to try to bullet proof coffee but am allergic to coconut. Can I just leave it out or is there something I can replace it with?

I have seen different versions of BPC out on the internet. I make mine with butter and MCT oil (refined coconut oil), but I have also made it wit just the butter. I have seen it out on the internet with just the butter. I love it. The butter makes it creamy and frothy almost like a latte. Use a good quality butter like Kerrygold. I think it makes a difference in taste.

You might be able to use MCT oil. It is distilled so the protein that typically caused an allergic reaction isn't present. You could make your coffee with just butter but I think it's the MCT oil that produces the most benefits.

You can just leave it out. I would consider using more butter or something...Hemp oil might work , but using butter and/or heavy cream should work, too.

You could also try the primal egg coffee, using the recipe link below.

http://www.healthfulpursuit.com/2015/04/rocket-fuel-latte/ (uses MCT, which is generally coconut based, but you might be able to find palm kernel oil, which may not cause reactions, but I don't know the coconut allergy well, so I don't know if that helps. She uses hemp oil in her other recipes, though...)

Oh, a note I found: To make coconut-free, use hemp oil in place of coconut oil and hemp milk instead of coconut milk. The flavor is a bit “hemp-tastic” as my husband pointed out. If you find it too hempy, it’s likely in the oil. You can add more spices to mask or use another of your favorite oils. However, MCT will generate ketones which will allow you to increase energy and benefit from that ketone development whereas hemp oil will not do this.

Dang I don't even put the butter. Just 4 oz of coffee, tbsp of MCT oil and a small shot of hwc. You think that makes a difference that I don't add it?

HWC and butter are very close together - butter is just heavy cream that has been whipped to a solid (the liquid whey settles out). The "official" original "recipe" that started it all was coffee, coconut oil, and butter. So as long as you aren't using massive quantities of heavy cream, you should be okay with cream in place of butter.

Most folks customize the recipe to taste, preference, and their own macros, so if it works for you, much like the majority of LCing in general, there is no strict right or wrong in this regard, @wishfullthinking79 ...

I've used hwc in mine since last June, and just recently began adding butter at times. I will use mct oil about once a week (I believe the stuff could prep you for a colonoscopy on its own, lol, even just a tsp in a 30 oz. cup of coffee!). I don't believe there's one way for all, just like the other aspects of this woe. It's finding what works for you! :)

I'm going to give butter a vote for being a better choice. There's less casein than in cream, which can be an issue even if you're not aware of it and using cream technically ends a fast if you like to use the coffee as a method of intermittent fasting because of the triggered digestion required for the proteins in the cream.

I do mine with 1 T butter, 1 T heavy whipping cream, and 1T sugar free caramel syrup. I threw it all in a magic bullet and blend it for about 10 seconds. Delicious!

Man this is why I love this forum. I never thought of hwc and butter in the same boat. I use the cream because I can barely stomach the coffee as it is. I can't imagine black. I am learning though. Maybe tomorrow I will add less cream just to give it a try.

One of these days I will get use to the coffee again. The mct oil and the caffeine are both really needed right now.

Sprinkle cinnamon or vanilla on top of grounds, along with a pinch of salt. It helps cut the bitterness and makes the coffee taste better.

Ha. I can't imagine 30 oz of coffee. I drink like 4 oz of coffee with a tbsp of MCT oil and a splash of cream. It definitely does not affect me that way. I contribute that to my meds though.

With the bodybuilding supplements. I don't have those stores, but I can get it at all the health stores in the area.

Be cautious, it is made from coconut normally, and even if you don't react to it, it can cause digestive issues if you start with too much. Start small!

Even Walmart has the Carrington Farm Brands of "Liquid Cooking Coconut Oil" or whatever they call it. I prefer to get mine on Amazon.com. I like the Buried Treasure brand. You can just melt coconut oil unless you're going specifically for the brain kick.

And I second starting slowly. My bottle recommended starting at 1 tsp (NOT TBSP) at a time, up to 3 times daily WITH food or some other fats (like BPC)... I took it solo once and OMG, my stomach still hates me.

I tried the BPC with mct oil and butter instead of adding the hwc. I was pleasantly surprised that it pretty much seemed the same. Again I only used about 4 oz maybe of coffee, a tbsp of mct, and maybe a little over a tsp of butter. I drank it pretty fast because I didn't want to have time to think about it. I am pretty happy.
