Time for the Bat signal!

Hmmm well we'll see if that image works :#

So yes I am sending out a bat signal for help because I have a type 2 diabetic friend who needs it. I am so new to the LCHF WOE, and have different goals than he does, that I don't think I should be the main one giving him tips/advice/ideas on implementing this WOE into his own life. Oh and I've discussed this post with him and he is totally good with me sharing his info.

His diabetes has progressed from being treated with diabetes meds, to long acting insulin, to now he is on long acting plus supposed to be injecting at each meal. And it is STILL not under control, and he's gained weight. He has seen a dietician (who gave him the low fat, carb laden guidelines that are recommended), sees his doctor and the diabetes clinic regularly but he has come to believe that it will just continue to get worse.

Which leads us to more recent times, with me starting LCHF and feeling sooooo much better physically and mentally and having so much more energy and losing weight to boot! And also, finding this amazing group of people here that I have been learning so much from. Seriously I feel like my blinders have been lifted!!

I have been sharing all this with him, and all the stuff I've been hearing about from you guys who have/had diabetes and the positive changes that have happened for you with low carb. He is interested in trying this out and joined MFP as a first step. He is now tracking and is very surprised to see how many carbs he is actually eating. He has watched the TED talk that was shared in another post, and a few others that were linked. He is not one for reading or taking part in a group forum really but he likes talking one on one with people and would love to see examples of what other people following a low carb diet eat.

Sooooooo, long story short: are any of you open to 'friending' him, so he can see your food diaries and also maybe if he has questions or wants someone to bounce ideas off of?

If so, his user ID is @medic13105

Thanks <3

If he has free time, I definitely recommend he listen to any of the talks he can from this seminar. The podcasts reset at 10 am EDT each day. You do have to sign up, but I think it's just so they can send you follow up emails and each day's list, etc. I haven't gotten spammed or anything. http://thediabetessummit.com/

One of the videos today is from a cardiologist who talks about how to get his diabetic patients under control with their glucose and such, and I don't agree with everything he mentioned, but he's all about "smart fats" but agrees he can't recommend coconut oil and excess saturated fats to his patients until there are more studies, but he believes that unless folks are medicated for high cholesterol or are at high risk of repeat heart attacks and such that they are mainly safe to use, and he gives his reasons.

Particularly, his clinic has a practice that gets most traditional T2D persons under blood glucose control on a 2 week program, but it basically involves a good bit of exercise to burn stored glucose stores up and temper insulin resistance... I found it interesting personally, since my insulin levels were up at my last appointment (I'm not diabetic, but am insulin resistant with diabetes in my family, so prevention is my current goal)...

He did have a book, and I didn't check his website, but I really enjoy the talk. Since I am not diabetic, and I'm kind of bad about filling out my diary sometimes, but I am insulin resistant, I am not sure how helpful I would be, but he's welcome to send me a friend request... @juliacougarrrr

Hi @juliacougarrrr I just sent him a friend request. I'm a T2 diabetic on insulin and have had a lot of success reducing insulin and keeping my Hba1c low eating LCHF.

My diary is wide open. For Low carb, moderate protein he would need to look 4/28 or earlier. since then I've been on a mission to induce remission and my diet has changed significantly (and MFP wouldnot approve.)

Thanks for the reminder. The dang thing about a breast cancer diagnosis (Monday) is that it kind of makes the rest of the world disappear! That's two things I know I spaced off.

Could you be persuaded to list your top 5 talks so far?

    Thanks!

The Micronutrient one was amazing. (caltonnutrition.com)

I truly learned a lot from the Thyroid one today (did you know mood hormones are controlled by your thyroid and many folks who have Hashi's have gotten mis-diagnosed as having bipolar??)... (thyroidpharmacist.com)

I learned more from the Gut Health one on Monday than I anticipated.... I think it's (http://www.mikemutzel.com)

The one on sleep made me feel like health is impossible, because I can't change my sleep habits enough to make a difference without changing my job first... (thepaleomom.com)

JJ Virgin's talk today was very educational (about the better way to step down on sugars - detoxing from it, etc.). I don't know that I agree with her theories on fiber, but I think I might try it. She explains why, if your blood sugars start going up after initial success on keto, that you might need to switch off onto another program, as keto can actually increase cortisol for those sensitive to it... (jjvirgin.com)

There are still 4-6 episodes per day through Sunday, so I anticipate this list will fluctuate...@RalfLott. Sadly, if you want the ones from before today, you have to pay for them, as they reset each day at 10 am EDT...

I hope your friend joins the group and reads the information in here! He doesn't ever have to respond, but the education that can be obtained from just reading can help many! I say, "Welcome to MFP" to him!!

    Thanks - much appreciated!

Perhaps they'll surface on YouTube before too long.....
