When you are craving salt ...

When you are craving salt and salty things to eat, is this an indicator that you need more sodium? I don't know if I am craving salt because I need more sodium or because I am in the process of removing carbs (many of which were salty) from my diet. I did work harder today (sweating, etc.) as I was moving furniture and boxes for my dad for 5 hours (split 3 hours this afternoon and 2 hours tonight). If I need to consume more sodium, what's the best approach? It's 1:19 am my time and all I seem to want right now is salt ... lol, literally to go shake some salt on my tongue. I feel a little loopy about doing that; but maybe it is normal??? Thanks, Elizabeth Maryam.

You probably need more sodium. It's very common when going low carb. Broth is a good way to get it!1

I have literally just put salt in my hand and eaten it little by little when I felt like I needed it.
You can add some to water, drink some salty broth, eat some pickles or olives... Eat anything very salty like pork rinds or bacon.
I have been able to get by with just salting my food for a while, I've been at this for almost a year now. Yesterday I donated plasma for the first time and I was exhausted afterward. I came home and made some broth with butter and that helped a lot. Still took a while to feel normal again though. I think they took too much!1 -

Thanks . I ended up not being able to have the broth, as soy protein was an ingredient, and I can't consume soy for medical reasons. So I followed your suggestion and put some salt in my palm and ate it, little by little and I'm not craving salt any more and I'm not grossed out either. Thanks so much. I hope you feel better0 -
Sea salt, not commercial table salt.
Per Dr. Mercola:
• Processed salt is 98 percent sodium chloride, and the remaining two percent comprises man-made chemicals, such as moisture absorbents, and a little added iodine. These are dangerous chemicals like ferrocyanide and aluminosilicate. Some European countries, where water fluoridation is not practiced, also add fluoride to table salt
• Natural salt is about 84 percent sodium chloride. The remaining 16 percent of natural salt consists of other naturally occurring minerals, including trace minerals like silicon, phosphorous and vanadium
Given that salt is absolutely essential to good health, I recommend switching to a pure, unrefined salt. My favorite is an ancient, all-natural sea salt from the Himalayas. Himalayan salt is completely pure, having spent many thousands of years maturing under extreme tectonic pressure, far away from impurities, so it isn't polluted with the heavy metals and industrial toxins of today. And it's hand-mined, hand-washed, and minimally processed. Himalayan salt is only 85 percent sodium chloride, the remaining 15 percent contains 84 trace minerals from our prehistoric seas.1 -

I've been eating sea salt or rock salt for years. Same reason. Craving salty snacks.
My doctor told me that it is bad for high blood pressure. I measured mine for 3 months without salt and hated the taste of food.
Then I salted my food for 3 months and compared.
NO DIFFERENCE.
My cholesterol is perfect and my blood pressure is high due to the 60 pound tire I carry everywhere with me.
But I don't worry about salt any more.
And pepper is basically a freebie.
Cheers1 -

Check out the Launch Pad for the story of Wab and his nephrologist, who told him to greatly increase his salt intake in order to fix his blood pressure. It's a great illustration of how it's not the salt that's the problem, but the water-electrolyte balance caused by too much or too little sodium.0 -
I just read it. Amazing. Just goes to show the dr don't know everything......

The only bouillon cubes I was able to find in my area that did NOT contain soy was this stuff:

Hope this info helps.

Thanks so much . Do you also have to stay away from soy products/ingredients?0 -
I eat Lawry's season salt everyday. It tastes so good. I lick the tip of my finger and dip into salt, then lick finger.
Yummy...

I'm a big salt craver too, even before lc. I have low bp so I feel like my body is just telling me to take more salt because of it. Pickles help especially when you want crunch too. Two things not to do, from experience: never take a teaspoon of salt in the palm of your hand and swallow it down like a pill with water, you will almost immediately vomit. 2nd don't put more than 1/4 teaspoon of salt in your water to drink at a time. Too much will cause what is known as a "salt flush" and you'll be in the restroom for some time1

I like Dills and olives. Even use the juice in recipes a lot. Sometimes I just take a sip.
Delicious....0 -
Yep! Pickle juice isn't as bad as I imagined it would be!0

I love pickle juice! I actually always have. I remember my parents trying to stop me from drinking it because "it was bad for me".
Then it probably was since I ate so much junk food!2 -

Careful - they might be surreptitiously harvesting your ketones!2 -

I bought a bag of empty gel capsules on Amazon, they fit about 1/8 teaspoon of salt. I fill one or two with lite salt and will take them when I can feel being low. My normal diet just doesn't require a lot of salt, especially now that I am intermittent fasting and eating less meals. I don't salt my salads either. And I'm also not a fan of the broth solution. Once in a while, but not every day. So the gel capsules have worked great for me.1

Being a nurse I'm surrounded by medical professionals. One day I developed a headache while at work. Everyone was making suggestions about medicines to takes for it (I'm allergic to them, so medicine options are bleak for me), but you should have seen their faces when I said, "I need some pickle juice!"!! Lol! I'm trying to educate them! But, pickle juice (or any other fermented fluids) truly help headaches!0
