5mile race tomorrow, nervous!

Hi,
Im taking part in my first 5mile race tomorrow and its meant to be pretty hot out, luckily it's in the morning so I'm hoping it won't be too bad.
My worry is that since running 8mile last weekend for the first time, I've been suffering a little bit with mild shin splints and its affected my training this week. My calves get extremely tight as well. I'm so annoyed with myself for pushing my body too far last weekend but at the time I felt fine!
Does anyone have any advice? I've been stretching as much as I can. I want to do well in the race, my original goal was 50mins, I was doing that easily so I reset my goal to 47mins, my best time has been under 45mins.
Thanks!

Make sure you are well hydrated going into the race and unless super hot, you should be OK. For the shin splints. two main reasons are over striding and/or tight shins. Focus on a shorter stride (which is not slower, a longer stride is actually harder and slower).
To warm your shins stand with the balls of your feet on the edge of a step, curb or other raised surface. Go up to your tip toes and then lower down so your heel goes lower than your toes. move up and down, you can do this quickly for a minute or two. Rest a bit and repeat and that should loosen them up.
If the temps are going to be above 78 or so (Fahrenheit) you might need to slow your pace slighly0 -
You might also try leg sleeves because compression does help0

thank you for all your advice! The race went really well considering the heat (hottest day of the year in england). My target time was 47mins, I completed it in 46mins even with a little walk half way through. Resting up the week before due to the shin splints helped a lot and in the end i didn't have too much trouble with the pain but i did have lots of time to stretch so that would have helped too.0
