I am 53 and have stared LCHF. I not new to low carb but I am to high fat. Years ago I lost 50 lbs on low carb but life got in the way and gained it back plus more . My DH lost over 100 and kept it off until hit 50. Due to medical stuff we have to get this weight off. My teen had a heart to heart talk with us and is so concerned about us. That was it! In ketosis and have to say already feeling better. My goal is to look and feel better then I did in my early 40.

@FaithMash2016 that is exciting to read. Best of success.
At 63 I went LCHF (<50 grams of carbs daily) Oct 2014 and it is by far the best WOE I have ever experience and still learning more everyday about living in a state of nutritional ketosis. At 65 my health markers are better than at 45.

That's great to hear☺That is my goal to live in a state of nutritional ketosis.1

I think the main difference you may find with higher fat is that you are even more satisfied because your food tastes so good with the added fat. There are conflicting studies about whether fat really is satiating or not - but in general you are likely to enjoy being on the diet more this way which has got to be a plus3

I'm in a similar boat. 52 and not new to low carb but yes to high fat. I have to agree this feels very different from prior low carb only attempts, very satisfying and I'm not bored with my food!4

Welcome.
My kids were hinting at me to lose weight last year too. It's a wake up call when your kids worry about you.
Now I am told, with wonderful tween tact, that I "look good for my age. " LOL
I've been keto, or keto 95+% of the time, for the last 10 months. Once you get in the groove of it, I fhave found it to be easy to eat this way - I feel better too.2 -

I am finding a big difference. It's funny how people have fat phobia. I don't say much about WOE.4 -

There is so many great recipes that we didn't have before. My family has no idea that they are eating LCHF.☺5 -

That's the best compliment to get from your tween.☺You got to love the WOE and I am not hungry at all.2 -

How many years have we been told fat is bad for us though! just the like eggs and cholesterol - it's going to take a long time to change that way of thinking.3 -

ahhhh..but it continues because NO medical staffer or RD trained in the USDA/AMA/Dietary Standard rigamarole of 45-65% carbs can approve anything else. Unless one has brain seizures then a Keto diet is not allowed to be advised.
My docs all freak out over the word "butter" and lecture on how it causes heart disease, high cholesterol --all connected to eating high fat..so in the end we must lie, evade or just ignore their advice. ( saying "olive oil" or "Mediterranian diet", or even "healthy fats" goes a long way sometimes...3 -
Well no one need know what you may determine as a "healthy fat" lol...2

I gave my diabetic nurse a sample of my daily menu when I visited her last and she was really impressed. I'm not eating much lunch right now, but at the time, I was having an omelette with avocado for breakfast, salad for lunch and steak and veg or stir fry veg & chicken for dinner, with my carbs under 35 g day. If I just said I was eating LCHF, I don't think she would have understood quite how healthy my diet was. Albeit I didn't focus on the butter I cooked my eggs in, the creamy dressing on my salad or the goose fat I cooked my veg in, but I did say I'm achieving greater food satisfaction by no longer eating a low fat diet. And instead of referencing low carb, high fat, I said I was on a ketogenic diet, I left it up to her to decide if she wanted to look that up.
I think many of us are eating more veg than SAD CICO dieters. If we talk to our medical professionals in terms of the actual foods we eat, they might be more open to a two way conversation.
But I will hedge all that by saying that eggs, steak and butter do not seem to be the enemy here the way they are in the US. There's much more of a focus on cutting sugar than fats and reducing the processed convenience foods.10 -

My coworker is vocal about her low fat diet and loves to tell us about what is good for you and what's not. As she eats low fat and complains about how sick and tired she has been
I just continue quietly eating my LCHF lunch and feel wonderfully full, wide a wake and happy3 -

lol - that's the way to do it Faith! I can't judge your co-worker.. I was anti-fat for a long long time and existed on all foods less than 5% fat to lose weight years ago. And it did work.. but if I knew then what I know now...!!!1 -

I have experiened so many more benefits than just being more satisfied and eating lots of yummy, fatty foods. There are a few changes I see immediatley (about 1-2 weeks into keto) and they are:- Reduced migraines
- Improved skin clarity, reduced blemishes and pores, increased radiance, reduced acne
- Improved sleep, waking up less frequently during the night (usually not at all) which means better able to wake up on time and having more energy throughout the day
- Suppressed appetite, more filling meals (as discussed)
- Less hair shedding, stronger and longer nails
- Less joint pain but this could also be because I haven't been strength training as I used to and now I am focused more on cardio
- Better mood, less anxiety
- Better mental focus which could be from better sleep and/or less anxious thoughts clouding my brain

I agree with most of that actually - i've noticed some amazing differences and some downright odd! - but good differences also.3 -
Many days I feel god on this way of eating, but lately I've been so tired and sleepy. BG are good ( generally in 90's) fasting and after meals.. I just wish I had more energy and weren't so sleepy!1

@Mirabelle1983 That may Have been it. I had a cup of bouillon and felt a bit better. I feel warmer than I have all day, too.3
-
Yes I noticed feeling really quite cold.. I am trying to up my sodium too but not easy trying to add salt to everything I eat.. so I've gone the bouillon way too...1

I feel so much better in general and have so much more energy since I started eating this way in December. @FaithMash2016 you're going to love it!3

I'm hearing more about avoiding processed foods here in the USA, lately! Tides are slowly turning, but it will take time for it to become a thing people understand! People just don't have a clue about the foods they choose to eat!

Jan I have had the same feelings personally. In my case my health was low when I started LCHF Oct 2014 and as my health recovers I go through periods of feeling different from time to time but 20 months in not so much.
On any way of eating we need to be aware of changes however and not ignore them.
Stormier weather like the last few days in KY makes me feel like lettuce looks after placed in hot water.1 -

You can get very inexpensive 1000mg sodium chloride pills on Amazon. It makes getting enough sodium easy and measurable.3 -

Thanks for that - I got magnesium and potassium supplements.. but didn't think about sodium. Think that may help me a lot as i'm not all that keen on drinking a stock cube2 -

Me too. Also, my typically cold hands and feet are a little warmer for the same ambient conditions. Feel more energetic.1 -
I really been enjoying this woe. BUT I have to admit having just a bite of "sweets" have crossed my mind. Why!0

I have only been on LCHF since April 1, feeling much better with less joint pain and more energy, as well. BUT, I have a health appointment tomorrow with labs... they're going to be wonky, I bet. I will be interested in the numbers, but I know I'll be fussed at! These people are very conventionally trained and won't approve unless and until they see results.0

Let's hope the lab work comes back positive. But the most important thing is YOU feel better. ☺Don't let them de-rail you.0 -
I think I just had a huge WHOOSH moment, is this normal? Not to be TMI, but I think I'm cleaning out my system with Keto pretty quickly. Any other lc's have this experience? I feel great today, day 3.0
