How can the scale suddenly drop by 3lbs?

I know this will sound like "what the heck are you complaing about"
Lately I've felt like I'm in a plateau and my weight loss has slowed but I don't think the scale agrees. I try not to weigh myself too often but usually end up doing so three or even four times per week. Today I got on and had dropped three pounds in just two days. That doesn't seem to make sense to me, but the numbers are right there. I admit that yesterday I was actually feeling like I might have lost weight, but three pounds? Does anyone else who has been at this for more than six months see such dramatic losses?

Maybe your body got rid of the water and this is a 'whoosh' effect?
I just reached my six month mark but I have experienced it before. No loss for a few weeks and then a loss of two pounds another week.1 -
I have not been at this for six months, but this happened to me once after several weeks with no loss. I wish it would happen again.2

Yup. Whoosh effect.
I gained 5lb on Saturday. If you can gain 5lb of water weight overnight, you can lose 3lb. Over the past 2 days I've lost all but 1.2lb of that 5. The body holds onto water sometimes in fat cells for awhile, then finally decides to let it go for whatever reason. Which is mostly because it has decided your condition is ok with the body's efforts to maintain a safe condition after all, and it doesn't have to freak out about it any more.
So no need for you to freak out about it either.3 -
Yup. Mine dropped 3 pounds from yesterday to today.2

Chiming in with an affirmative. Gained 5lbs Sunday cooking and eating dinner with all my kids and grandkids. Lost 3 lbs on Tuesday. It's not the first time and hopefully will happen again soon. lol1

Just to clarify, whoosh isn't water weight. It is. But it isn't. Your fat cells don't want to shrink so they are retaining more water after you very unceremoniously drained them of fat. But eventually they have to accept that they are smaller. C'est la vie, little cells. C'est la vie.9

Whooshes are so awesome! I did a 6lb woosh after an 8wk plateau. Everyone else has explained it pretty well, so I'll skip that part. Congrats on the loss!4

@DorkothyParker thanks for the giggle. Love cest la vie little cells. @Christine_72 great graphic. Thxs for sharing. Got to love a whoosh. I can gain a couple of pounds at TOM then loose them again. Trend lines are so helpful, plus in terms of not getting a bounce in the wrong direction: not partying too hard nor having my mother visit (AKA stress and social compliance carb eating).1

Potassium is also diuretic. Congrats on the whoosh!0
