Gaining Weight while Exercising

I'm about 12 weeks along and decided to start shooting for 1/2lb a week, but I also need to exercise more. I didn't even work out much this week, but I lost almost 1lb.
How can I make sure to eat enough, especially of protein? We're poor college students, and WIC doesn't buy meat. Before exercise I should get 2,070 calories, but after something like my swim class I should get at least 300 more.
Any help?

WIC in my area does pay for peanut butter and milk/milk products, so I frequently go that route for protein. Either buy your meat in bulk, or try to buy it frozen.
Listen to your hunger cues. If you feel hungry, eat; doing things like that will help make sure that you are eating enough for both you and baby.0
