Here's an irony: In 1914, only the well to do tended to be fat. Working folks burned off all those potatoes following a plow, hauling coal, working a steam engine. It's pretty much the reverse these days, with low income and obesity tracking together.6

It's interesting how the definitions of "attractive" change. If you look at photographs of Lillian Russell, THE dream girl of the 1890's, you have to guess that stage floors were concrete reinforced at the time. Lillian and a herd of Floradora Girls must have totaled a ton and a half.3
