Turns out it is related to Mao. And the fact threat swimming lessons are expensive in China even by US standards.
Mai only knew the breast stroke.
The breast stroke (not the competition stroke, but the one step advice doggy paddle stroke) is claimed to be taught in just 10 lessons.
Only students that show potential are taken to athletics schools where they go further or if their parents are well off enough to afford lessons. And in some cases the kids go to private schools that have swim teams.

This is interesting. There are several Asian people at my gym who only breast stroke. And not the way I was taught to do breast stroke-perhaps this is the reason why.0

Some do freestyle. But very few. I'd guess less than 5%.
The bear stroke taught to those not involved in competition is more like the one your grandma does in the pool.0
