Eating carbs after workout

I've had an ongoing debate with my trainer about this. He insists I need to eat proteins and carbs as soon as possible after a workout. He knows I'm on a ketogenic diets and does not approve of it.

My workout is weights and machines for 45-60 minutes - 3 times a week - no real cardio. I have no problem with the protein - typically a hard boiled egg, but it seems wrong to add more carbs - better to let my body burn up the fat or any carbs already floating around. Also I don't generally feel hungry after a workout unless its intense.

Why does he feel this way? I don't do heavy workouts but I do walk and I don't find any issues with walking 3 miles at a good clip and not eating carbs. I keep mine under 20g. Can't imagine what his rationale is beyond "that's what I've always been taught". I'm a nurse and it took a while for me to convert too...because of what I've always been taught. Everything I learned in nursing school? yeah...wrong...

I lift weights as well and I don't feel the need for carbs, whether it is before or after the workout.

The hard boiled egg is great for what you're doing.

Would there be any consequence of not listening to his advice?

    I don't think so

I walk on non workout days- last week did 1.5 hours in a park with ravines - so I climbed several hundred feet of hills also. I felt no need for food - just water.

If you feel fine without carbs then go ahead and disregard his advice. You are using the protein in your eggs to help recover from the weights. I lift five times a week and do fine without carbs. My post workout meal is usually my breakfast which is hard boiled eggs and bacon. I don't feel like it is hindering my recovery.

Well , Since i started low carb high fat... my lifts took a real hit ... about 40- lbs less on my working sets... and i still am not able to consistently hit my previous lifts.. eating a bit more of carbs before the gym , as I've personally experienced made me much more productive with my lifts in the gym.
ideally around 50 ish grams of carbs on gym days seems to work for me... but this isn't enough to put me into keto on off days it seems... id have to be hitting close to 20 ish grams of carbs...

I get on the treadmill in the morning before breakfast having eaten only 1650 calories/day the day before with about 30g carb.

I can work at 4mph at 5 degrees for two hours. That will burn >1500 calories. No carb loading.

Then I get a lchf breakfast and feel like a million bucks. I do that 6 days/week. My workouts are a minimum of 60 minutes and a max of 120. I average about 90 minutes/day for the week.

I see no consequences except the scale showing my weight loss every day.

If I am doing something really bad... someone please let me know. But I kinda like the results I am getting!

Lots of trainer were raised on carb centric ideas

I use carbs as specific application fuel. Yesterday was the first weekend of high volume ride for triathlon season training. 25 miles at 18+ mph Saturday, then 43 mile ride Sunday. I took a 120 calorie drink with me on Sunday. I had 2 Quest bars. That was it.

Lots of water of course but definitely no carb loading after I was done! Carbs are activity fuel, not for resting. My opinion there

    #contextmatters.

If fat loss is primary goal, no need carbs. If higher output performance, then a small amount of dextrose or similar fast acting carbs can be useful, IME. Given if you're already keto adapted.

Gotta earn the carbs. Only you know at which intensities carbs might help. YMMV. Oh, and NO fructose. It goes to liver, not fuelling muscles. Good luck whatever you choose :)

I doubt I'm training at a high enough level to need the carbs. I've been only doing serious gym/weights for about 6 months, but my trainer is ecstatic about my progress. My aim there is to gain strength/flexibilty/stamina and also help with neurodegenerative issues - but the weight loss primarily from lower calories.

I could barely lift an unloaded bench press bar in December - now I can do 80.

I'm also wondering if I should try and take coconut oil after workouts - I already take about 4 tablespoons spread out over a day.

If the PT is so ecstatic about your progress...why does he insist that you change your protocol ? >:)

Sounds like you're doing wonderful :)

I know - makes no sense now. When I started, it made sense since I was an unknown quantity - so I followed what he said.
