A lot of us are looking for new meat ideas. Well, in 10 or 20 years we may have a new protein source. Meat grown in vitro. My initial reaction is "ewww", but who knows, I do see the merit in the need for feeding the world. On the other hand, Burger anyone?

Shame the idea of manufactured food like that for the sake of feeding the world is based on the false premise that the plight of starving third world populations has to do with a shortage of food (or the fact that, arguably, the solution of "produce more food" is solving the wrong problem). =/

Then, there's the question of nutritional quality. They created protein and eventually (hopefully) fat! Great! What about the vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that we need to thrive that exist in real, grown food? The early ketogenic diet studies, where the patients subsisted on what amounts to fortified soybean oil proved that not all fats, proteins, and "nutrients" are created equal.

I remember "Soylent Green"! Man, what a dark movie and Charlton Heston's reaction at the end when he says, "It's people!" grosses me out still!

Protein is important. People not starving is important. The planet is important. Bring on the fake meat!

But there is enough 'real' food to feed all the people on the planet - it's just half the world has waaayyyyy too much while the other half have too little. The amount of food wastage in the western world is unbelievable.
I always feel a bit saddened when I see programmes like man vs food or there was this programme in the UK where they made giant versions of regular food items - there are people starving in the world but we watch people gorging themselves in the name of 'entertainment' - just so wrong.
