Sugar Intolerance ? for anyone

Hi - I had the sleeve 11/2015. I know with RNY you may get dumping. What level of carbs/sugar do you have to stay under to avoid it?

I think I have an intolerance to sugar and haven't been able to pinpoint the level where it makes me ill yet.
Thanks!

I have an intolerance to corn syrup, have for years. Since sleeve, I've also noticed it with other "syrup" ingredients. I don't know if there's something with the processing or what. I try to avoid things with any added sugars (other than honey), and with the exception of lactose, I keep the per serving level to 5 grams or less. Dairy sugars don't affect me, so as long as there's nothing else, they can be 15 grams per serving and I'm good.

Trial and error. I may be able to do higher, I've just decided to keep it that low for now. It's working. I don't poke the bear.

I had RNY nearly 11 months ago, the guideline given by my surgeon is nothing that has more than 10 grams of sugar/serving. Everyone has a different tolerance and it can depend on what else is in the food (fat, protein) that can affect the uptake. I've stuck to this...but haven't managed to avoid some dumping altogether.

For instance, something (sugar alcohols???) in the Atkins Dark Chocolate Decadence Bars make me sick every time...sweaty, nauseous, light headed. It makes me very sad because I find them to be very tasty.

I know that I also can't tolerate Maltitol as a sweetener--I had a very bad night after eating one too many no sugar added chocolates.

Agave syrup and coconut sugar don't seem to cause me any problems...though I avoid eating any of it in an amount that would be likely to cause a problem.

You should also consider that something that causes you a problem now may not be a problem further down the road as your body adjusts...and vice versa.

Thank you both, that is very helpful. I haven't had any issues for a couple months until Tuesday night...it was a bad night! Hours of cramps and pain. I had some yogurt so it puzzled me. I'll figure it out but this gives me some ideas. Thanks again!

My suggestion is to just stay away from sugar altogether, eat naturally sweet things instead....I know that's of no help but it's that much of a problem but you're still trying to findo ways around it so you can eat sweets I feel like maybe you should step back and evaluate what the real problem is: a sugar intolerance or an obsession to want to eat your sweets.

I mean no disrespect, I'm a sugar addict so the behavior is plain as day to me. I used to eat bowls full of candy as a meal from young age and never really quit that behavior until having sleeve done. Now even the liquid or chewable supplements are too sweet to the taste for me and kinda turns my stomach. I havent gotten sick from it yet but I think that's because I go out of my way to avoid it.

Sugar alcohols are best for you because they don't process through your system as processed sugar does and artificial sweetener is just gross and much too sweet. Sugar alcohols will get your sugar down to 1-3g per serving in most cases which is really the range anyone should be in and you don't have any funny after taste or feel robbed of sweets.

Xorbitol is one you can buy, I found it on Amazon.com.

Check out ketogenic info for some sugar swaps.

Read the label on the yogurt too! The "low fat" varieties are full of sugar!

@sicnic5150 Do you mean Xylitol? There's Sorbitol, but I even googled to no avail for Xorbitol.

Also, people need to be careful with sugar alcohols. Some people retain fluids using them. Some people are way more sensitive and cannot break them down. As Amanda said, some are quite evil. I cannot do Maltitol unless it's in the last ingredients on a long list. If it's the top sweetener, I will be sick. Guaranteed. Xylitol does not seem to affect me. Interesting tidbit about xylitol, it's great for protecting teeth and is found in many toothpastes. I can do sorbitol, just not often or I do start retaining water.

I find splenda induces inflammation for me, so I avoid all sweeteners.
Sugar does the same, for me too! Makes it easier to avoid them when you can see their effects!
