LCHFers with reflux, come in

My reflux and stomach issues got so much better after I started keto in November. I was also on an MS med at the time that was causing most of the stomach problems. I was able to go off my daily prilosec, stopped taking that med in Jan or Feb (on a different one now) ... and just recently my reflux has flared again.

I saw a new dr yesterday (my new PCP who I loved and was supportive of LCHF moved unexpectedly). She thinks coffee might be the problem, plus I've read high fat foods are often a trigger for reflux. I've had nausea, stomach pain and a lot of gas/bloating along with the reflux over the past 2 weeks. I'm not convinced it's just reflux or that the prilosec she put me back on will solve the problem (though I'm trying it).

Anyhow, just wondering what LCHFers have found that helped. I'd tried a bunch of OTC meds and also ACV before seeing the dr and nothing really seemed to help. I'm suspecting food triggers, too, since my stomach issues had cleared up so well when I first started LCHF but haven't identified anything yet. I had eaten more carbs right before all this started (on maintenance--sort of--and on vacation) but it's been 2.5 weeks and still having a lot of pain and discomfort.

Overall, the reflux is better with LCHF for me. It's triggered by other foods, though-- wheat, nightshades (tomatoes, white potatoes, peppers, etc), soy, corn products. Many artificial sweeteners trigger it, too.

I take digestive enzymes with most meals. They help quite a bit.

I also take protonix once a day, still on it due to high-dose steroids.

A couple years ago the reflux and nausea were severe, and I had stomach pain after taking meds. My primary treated me empirically for an ulcer (carafate 1gm every 6 hours and twice daily protonix) and it cleared up nicely within a few weeks. Down to just the protonix once a day since then.

One of the biggest things I have noticed is more on the "END" of digestion. Since adding the enzymes, ACV, probiotics, and DE, I have very little problems with loose/acidic stools unless I take too much magnesium...

Thanks for the replies. I remembered reading on here that sometimes it's really too little acid. I felt worse when I tried the ACV though. (I tried it a few times to make sure.)
I might need to look into the digestive enzymes along w/the probiotics.

This has brand recommendations and links at the end. They aren't too terrible overall... And the ACV might be the wrong acid for you to add. I can tell you absolutely that the Betaine HCL works differently than the ACv. I tend to use them together or alternate... I use ACV in the am, a combo at lunch, and depending on dinner, one, the other, or both. The pills are easier for "out and about," obviously.

Edited to add - the first one suggested, NOW brand, is what I have. My good zone seems to be 1 pill if with ACV, 2 pills if alone. 3 pills and I get acidic loose stool.
