I know people all choose their WOE for different reasons. For me, even eating cleanly weight doesn't come off if I have a fair amount of carbs in my diet (even if I'm only eating complex carbs). I suspect insulin resistance.
Anyways, for most people, low carb or LCHF works for them!! And they see great improvements in their health. However for some people, I know that it's actually harmful. Now I can't remember what ends up elevated that's so bad, or any other side effects. (I plan on getting myself tested once I'm fully transitioned just to be safe though!!) What is everyone's take and experiences? Seems better to ask those who have experience in practice rather than theory.

There are a few people whose cholesterol levels are negatively affected by fats but they are an anomalous minority. Those people will see triglycerides go up, LDL go up, and HDL may fall - all the opposite of what usually seems to happen.
Those with gall bladder problems may have to be careful with a high fat diet.
I can't think of any other problems that could result from LCHF.1 -
I think what you mentioned was what had me worried -- the cholesterol thing. Thankfully my gall bladder is A-OK!! It's awesome to know it's not common. Since this woe seems so helpful, it would kinda suck to find out down the line it isn't as beneficial as I though.
I remember seeing someone post about having a kidney or liver hiccup, but I'm not positive it was from the diet. The pros seems to outweigh any potential cons0 -
Just as a comment to the gallbladder mention, I don't have a gallbladder and it has taken some adjustment. I was actually looking into this diet to lose weight last year when the one sole stone decided to lodge itself in the wrong spot and my gallbladder became necrotic. I had to have it removed pretty emergently (the doctors were shocked that I had been able to walk into their office). Anyway, So long as I spread out my meals a little bit, I fare pretty well. I have had some issues with very mild nausea from the excess fat, but tbh, that's been a problem my entire life. An upset stomach doesn't faze me b/c I've never not had one. It does make things move through my system more quickly. Your liver releases bile at a steady rate since there isn't a storage depot, anymore. So if I keep my eating more at a nosh, rather than big meals far apart, I feel better. Until your body adjusts, it is smart to stay near a toilet, though. ;-)1

I had great changes in cholesterol when I went lchf! My total cholesterol looked high being a little over 200 but my HDL was 85! And my trigs I think we're less than 100...I'm thinking like 71 or something. Honestly I've read that even if you see LDL go up its not necessarily bad...the good or bad is in the particle size...the big fluffy particle size tends to increase on this woe and the small sense harmful particles seem to almost go away. I also read that if your trigs are low and HDL high you can pretty much bet that your LDL is mostly big fluffies:)0

Do you mean with lipid panels on a LCHF diet? HDL goes up. LDL can go down, stay the same or go up but the particles become healthier (larger) - I think that's pattern a(?). Doctors wont susualy est particle type thpugh so LDL may come out looking "high". Triglycerides usually go down.

Your HDL is 85 which is fantastic. That's a large part of your "high" total cholesterol. The important thing would be to look at the ratio. The only thing that could really come down would be your LDL which is part of your total cholesterol. I think ideally it should be under 100 (I'd have to look it up to see if I'm recalling correctly). Do you have a previous bloodtest to compare it to? Maybe your LDL has come down, but your HDL was low, so it made it seem like your cholesterol was better, when in fact, it wouldn't have been were that the case.0 -
I think this was the talk that well covered the cholesterol issue.
Don't forget that high cholesterol itself isn't a bad thing. It's actually shown that people live longer with higher cholesterol. It's the ratios that matter.

So true! My cholesterol was too low for years and my doctors thought it was great. I was worried though and very annoyed with them. LOL0
