Lots of interesting stuff at Gastropod (suggested by a reader in the MFP Chit-Chat forum), which "looks at food through the lens of science and history."
I liked the recent episode, "The End of the Calorie" and accompanying article in Mosaic.

interesting how cooking food, whether starches or meats, makes the 'calorie' more available to the body's energy systems... Neat articles, thanks @RalfLott3 -

Interesting article! Thx.
"Our results indicate significant contributions from cooking to both modern and ancestral human energy budgets. They also illuminate a weakness in current food labeling practices, which systematically overestimate the caloric potential of poorly processed foods."
Yet another weak link in the food labeling system.

I listened to a few of their podcasts, their one on calories was fasinating and discussed the discrepancy in labeling, including how nuts are generally OVER estimated by 5-30%. Thanks again for mentioning it, I will likely listen to most of their podcasts.1

Wow! This link is a home run having just read it.0

FYI, Jason Fung's Youtube channel recently posted his indictment of the woebegotten calorie, "The Calorie Deception."
I'm not a rabid calorie counter, but the fact that the calorie box has fuzzy corners doesn't mean it's completely useless. (Dangle from rear-view mirror?)
I think it's more that it's been the only game in town for decades, even longer than Low-Fat and its entourage of sick-makers (like margarine, coffeemate, and the arch horrible, skim milk).
If someone just stumbled on the idea of counting calories today and published a paper showing a "strong correlation" between estimated CICO and body weight or BMI, I'll bet it wouldn't be long before DIY calorimeters started popping up on eBay and Amazon...2 -
Bump for recent calorie talk.1

Gastropod is a great podcast! My boyfriend has me hooked on listening to them when I'm working out now. Also on the list is: The Daily Lipid, Fat Burning Man, Bulletproof Radio, No Meat Athlete, Ben Greenfield Fitness, and more.
I like listening to smart people interview top scientists in the fields of fitness and nutrition talk about the stuff I'm trying to do. Most of the stuff on the MFP forums just makes me fall out of my chair laughing2 -
Hmm. "and more" = ??
Thanks for the tips!1 -
So this would definitely explain why cultures traditionally brought up on stews are so damned predisposed to being jacked beastmen.2

Thanks, that was a very interesting article about the calorie.1

Fun. Thanks for this. Something to listen to on the treadmill this morning.0

Based on these comments, I'll definitely have to listen to this. I was somewhat nonplussed by the headline, wondering how snails and slugs could contribute to our health journey. Snails and slugs and crawly things, oh my.3

Okay I am dying to listen to this, I'll have to listen on my lunch time walk!0

I REALLY enjoyed this. THANKS!1

Along the same lines, here is Amy Berger's blog from this past Wednesday: Obesity is (mostly) a Hormonal Issue: Let's Stop Pretending it's Solely About Calories2
-
It still boggles the mind how so many still think of weight gains as a Calorie ONLY issue.2

Even assuming CICO is valid, our futile efforts to accurately account for calories would be like trying to tune a Peterbilt from a Big Wheel diagram....4 -
All these links are good reading, thanks to all who posted a link.1

OOouuuwww! Big Wheel! I forgot about them (yes, I am that old, ahahah).

Amy Berger and "CICOtards." Eeeep, I'm probably not allowed to repeat that here.... lol.3
