Is is advisable to use these to check if I'm doing this right? If so where do I get them?

Not worth the bother. They only tell you part of the story not the whole story.

Blood meters are the best but the strips are expensive.

Best bet is just to track your carb count.

They're not necessary. Can be a reassuring novelty but they can also make you think you're not making ketones even when you are because of your level of hydration and how diluted your urine is can give a negative result.
If you won't be discouraged by a negative result even when you know you're eating very few carbs then go ahead and grab some. Should be by the diabetes supplies at your pharmacy.
If they show any ketones at all, you're making plenty of them. If they don't show any, it doesn't mean you're not. It could just mean your urine is diluted enough to affect the result.
