Food Intolerance - Yogurt

This is my 4th week low carb. I am following an Atkins type plan. I started on 20g carbs per day for 2 weeks, then I'm adding 5g per week. Introducing a new food category. I'm losing weighty, feeling great and have loads of energy. I've done this because I experienced some ibs symptoms before starting.

So I've had small amount of cream (tsp in a drink) and also some cream cheese (30g Max af a time) so I didn't consider dairy to be an issue. This morning I had. Small pot of full fat Greek yogurt 3.5g net carbs. I feel terrible. I have stomach ache, feel sick, burping and I'm certain need a toilet dash soon.

So the yogurt has caused something in me to feel this way. However I've had cream cheese/cream with no issues. So it's all dairy. Why would the yogurt make me feel this way and not the cream?

I plan on avoiding the yogurt, I might try it again next week to confirm it was the yogurt. Anyone else struggle with dairy.

I haven't tried yogurt. But have found an intolerance to veggies with symptoms like you describe. I believe that complete elimination of some foods will show us what that food was doing to our bodies, without realizing it, then when adding it back the symptoms are exaggerated, because our bodies don't know what to do with them.

Just wondering is it certain veggies? My cousin is sensitive to nightshades.

@Sarahonadietx - this is a very similar digestive reaction to what I get with all foods now that I've discovered I have low stomach acid. It wasn't an issue for the majority of foods for a long time until I burned thought whatever limited stores I had (without a gallbladder). I now take apple cider vinegar and/or digestive enzymes with most meals.

However, prior to going low carb, I had major sensitivities to cream cheese, sour cream, and yogurt. I can now tolerate and even embrace them now (the yogurt in small quantities, but I make a "faux" yogurt with sour cream and heavy cream that's awesome)...

It may also be a sweetener that is in the yogurt that's causing you gastro-distress. They are often sweetened with artificial sweeteners that are hard on our guts. You might also try a different brand, as the culture used can be hard on your stomach, particularly if you're healing a leaky gut.

As @KnitOrMiss stated it could be the artificial sweetener in the yogurt. Could be just plain lactose intolerance. You had cream cheese and small amount of cream with no problem, but I assume these were with other foods that may have eased the digestive problems. Maybe it was just the quantity that was the problem or that it was consumed on it's own without other foods.

I would just skip the yogurt from now on if it were me or try it in smaller amounts with other foods to see if it has the same effect.

It could be the lactose in the dairy...cream averages 3% lactose, and cream cheese between 1/2% and 3% depending on how it's made while full fat yogurt is 4.1-4.7%

Not only are you eating a larger quantity of the yogurt, ounce for ounce it has more lactose and that may be causing the unpleasant reaction.

It may also be that the kind of yogurt you are eating is high is probiotics (many are). If that is the case, it can upset they internal system for a while until the body adjusts.

@karebear5891 , it seems to be all veggies as long as I don't eat them more than a couple times a week. My attempt at maintenance has proven this, for me.

    Hello SARAH,

You actually are describing Lactose Intolerance as I experience it, if you want to test yourself there is a product, LACTAID, you can chew along with the first bites of yogurt.

There is no need to purchase the more expensive LACTAID brand, a generic from GNC will do fine.

If it is the lactase enzyme you're missing, those pills will change your life. However I find with Kerry Gold butter, there is no problem.

    Good Luck

This is what came to mind for me too.
