Ketosis?

How long can one stay in ketosis for without it negatively impacting health?
For example, if one were to stay in ketosis for 10 months consecutively more or less, never "cheating" or having higher carb days over christmas with one's family, would that harm health? In some way?

There's no reason to believe that it couldn't be done for life. That's my plan. I've been Keto for 15 months with no cheats and no plans to ever eat differently.6

So you've never once accidentally fallen out of it or anything?0 -
Even if you slip off the ketosis wagon from some minor dietary "cheat" (not recommended - better to figure out how to work that Twinkle into your weekly meal plan...), many people can get back on again by going for a long swim, walk, bike ride, etc. Folks seem to think about ketosis as either on or off, but real-life situations aren't always quite so stark.
I'm not aware of any health hazards for the general population. But specific individuals may react adversely to ketogenic diets for a variety of reasons (e.g., can't handle the recommended level of fat or sodium intake).
Good luck!6 -
I know for me when I have the odd cheat or don't have an option with food (at someone else's house) I get right back on again. Interestingly, I mustn't knock myself out too much because I never have the flu feelings. Our bodies must have some sort of memory of ketosis!3

I don't measure if I'm in ketosis. I guess I just go by feel. But I can tell by urine and breath smell. Oddly my breath only smells upon waking and goes away after that. But I've only been in for 2 weeks. Still have another 2 of adaptation to go.
But I was just wondering if one stays in it for a long time if it has any negative impact. Guess not then. Yay! I might cheat slightly come Christmas when everyone is pressuring me. But other than that, I don't believe I will have a reason to.0 -

Forgot to mention - lots of great resources in the LCD Launch Pad sticky thread.
No substitute for devoting a few hours a week to reading, watching & thinking about your Great Experiment. It's uncharted territory for the vast majority of health care professionals, and feeling secure in your knowledge if you encounter resistance (intelligent or otherwise...) may prove quite helpful some day!

Nice going. 15 months is quite an accomplishment!
I have to imagine Keto-cocktails have helped lubricate the process....0 -
I have just been eating few carbs, following the guidelines of LCHF eating, but don't actually know if I AM in ketosis. I do know that I have lost a lot of fluid on my legs and scale weight. Without measuring ketones, is there a way to be sure one is in ketosis?0

The only way to be 100% sure, is to either run literal zero carb (nigh impossible), or have blood work done to look for it.1 -
@Gallowmere1984 Thanks

I dunno if zero carb, assuming you could figure out how to do it, would do the trick by its lonesome. According to Phinney & Volek, if you hold your fat level down and fill the gaping carb void with protein only, you'll start converting the spare protein (and your BG will rise if you're diabetic). So you might have to continue holding your protein steady and down more whale blubber instead.
I was flabbergasted when I learned that my penny-pinching health insurance carrier just started covering a wide range of diabetes "management" stuff - including ketone breath tests and blood test strips - and services - including retinal images and nutritionist consults - (if you can find a good one... ).

Yes, that's definitely correct on the protein. Given the nature of this community, I did assume that high fat would be a given, so thanks for catching that. When I said literal zero carb, I was referring to something like a 0/75/25 outlay, or even 0/80/20.1 -

As far as I know.
I have tested at times. Even done a full week (a couple of times) testing multiple times a day. Sometimes by blood meter...
I never eat any grains at all. Ever.
The only sugar I get is from berries or veggies or dark chocolate. I never eat much of any of those.
I've been able to reduce my stimulant medication for ADHD because of the advantage of ketones for brain energy, so I'm pretty sure I've stayed in ketosis the whole time at varying degrees.
I feel amazing! Never been healthier in my life. And I had no health issues at all that brought me to slow carb way of life. It was just weight loss. Not even a lot. Just 35 pounds2 -
Have managed Keto level of carbs for 17 months with only health improvements. No side effects from being Keto, and lab work is all within normal limits.2
