Hope everyone had a great weekend with lots of riding. Lot's to discuss!

First off, always good to watch the TdF. I know the crashes are spectacular, but I was glad that there were fewer of them this year, and that more riders rode to Paris than ever before.

Not sure if the massive brush fire near us is making national news, with all the political stuff going on, but yeah it's huge. Some structures/homes have burned, over 10000 homes have been evacuated just in case. The fire is over a huge area and encompass some of our favorite roads to ride on. In fact we rode through the heart of this area last week. Here's the ride from last week https://ridewithgps.com/users/146282/activities The whole area on the right hand side of the map is/was completely engulfed. The Amgen tour came up that road this year.

No riding Saturday, with tons of smoke and ash in the air, not to mention it got to 110F!

SO considering the fire and the 100+ degree heat, we took off for the coast on Sunday. 25 of us did a nice coastal ride from Ventura up to Summerland (about 10 miles south of Santa Barbara) in glorious 72 degree weather. Had brunch. Rode back. 47 miles total. Just a smidge of climbing. One scary moment. We were riding back along a straight slightly downhill road and the road turn right, moderately sharp. Didn't think it was too bad. We were going about 26 mph, drafting etc. I made the turn no problem, but then I heard that unmistakable horrible sound immediately behind me. A person went down. Her tires slid out from underneath her on the turn, or her pedal hit the ground as she leaned. She was pretty shaken up. Thanks to some helpful residents, she was taken to a fire station, and then to a hospital. Fortunately, nothing broken, no concussion etc. Bruises and road rash are the extent of it. Other than that it was a great fun ride.

    Good Grief Mark! That's terrible.
I had a wonderful Gourmet Century ride on Saturday with amazing foods from shredded smoked trout to add to scrambled eggs, lox, bagel and more for breqakfast to unbelievable charcuterie, tuna (with pink center and accoutrement tostada. Gosh and 6 course dinner.

Rode almost 70 miles (69+) and climbed between 4200 and 4500' along the way. Nice.
I grew up in So Cal and have witnessed many fires but that sounds terrible.

Mark, Hope your community is not in the path of the fire. Bob, food and ride sounds good to me. For me I got two 26 mile rides in Fri/Sat pretty flat just rode the bike trails here in the are. Weather was hot and humid here this week and did not want to push my luck. Sunday was an easy 7-8 mile ride with church folk on the Green Bay to Wausau rail to trail. Put new tires on the hybrid this weekend. Probably just in time. When I look at the back tire its amazing I did not have any flats (thank you Mr Tuffy tire liner). I guess 3K plus miles may be a little too many :).

Bob, that sounds like an amazing ride! I just looked it up...gourmetcentury.com/ride/. There's one in Sonoma on Oct 29th. It's a 6 hour drive but we may have to do it! Was actually planning on going up to Sonoma on Thursday to check out the college there for DS.

Yeah Sonoma should be awesome and not bad wines either. tires are always a good thing.
I didn't mention but we had more than a mile of dirt and loose gravel along the way. Glad I had my tubeless tires on and got no flats. Had I known ahead of time I would have used my carbon fiber cross bike with the 700 x 28 tubeless on it. Works great as a road bike and would be better on dirt and gravel than my 700c x 23 tubeless on my other road bike.
