Cross training -- what do you do, and how often?

I was just curious about what other people do on days when they don't run. I know some people that don't cross train at all, and just use their non-running days as rest days, but others seem to do a lot of weight lifting, etc. I just started some strength exercises on my "off" days, but I have to say, I am very sore and I do think it is affecting my half marathon prep, so I'm thinking of backing off on it. Does cross training work for you?

I was doing P90X but after finishing that I don't think I could have kept going much longer. It was just too much. You'll be sore for a week or two when beginning strength training but once you get past that it's OK. I think some strength training is great so I wouldn't totally back off. After reading "Anatomy for Runners" and "Run Less, Run Faster" I combined many of their recommended exercises along with core workouts I saw online to make two different workouts that focus on different regions. One day is upper body & core focused and another day is lower body & chest focused. Roughly 75% of the exercises are without weights. Then I try to get out on my bike once a week so that gives me 3 days of cross training. The two books I mentioned have different views of what is cross-training, the first once recommending traditional weightlifting with free weights and plyo, while the second one recommends stuff like biking, swimming, or rowing (non weight-bearing exercises).

I just lift and currently training for my 3rd 1/2. I did the extra cross train using the elliptical or other things during my first 1/2 and I feel it contributed to my IT injury. Didn't use it during my second 1/2 and felt much better and was stronger. Everyone is different though!
  • I use the gym for elliptical Arc trainer Bike trainer and weight room for my cross training...or at home high step-ups with weight

I go to Title Boxing Club on my off days. The conditioning from that has majorly improved my running. I'm running faster and further than I did when I was 50 pounds lighter! It really helped to build my core and legs. Sometimes my runs are a bit sluggish, especially if the boxing workout was really tough. Just need to listen to my body!

I teach Spin classes so that is my cross training. Non impact and feels great on the joints! I also do a day of Pilates/Yoga.
  • I started crossfit on my off days and my shorter run days. The first two weeks suck but after that it isnt that bad if you can find a good box.

I do a Spin Class as my cross training once a week. I've heard Spin or Elliptical are some of the better actual "cross training" for runners. When it comes to strength training, I've heard things like squats and lunges are better than heavy lifting...

But this is all just what I've heard, I am no expert.
