Eh, those people are full of crap. Sugar soda is definitely worse.
The sweetener is fine. A whole lot of caffeine though, may not be so good. Look up caffeine in regards to cortisol spikes if you want to follow up. You could avoid that with caffeine-free diet soda.

Actually have been using a Dark Chocolate liquid Stevia to add to coffee or decaf, can't tell you how good it is. In my past life pre (LCHF) it was normal for me to enjoy chocolate treats, this cuts out any deprivation.
The dark choc stevia along with heavy cream and Kerry gold are as good as good can get.....still losing without any hunger and no cravings.
Whoa. Brand?
The brand I've been using is Stevia Select:

Uh-oh. If cortisol tells your liver to crank up the glucose machine and caffeine spikes your cortisol levels, I don't think I'm going to like what I find...
Thx for the warning, @feisty_bucket
Yet, as a T2D I test my BG 4x-10x daily, and I've never observed a connection between coffee/diet soda and BG levels.

It was my understanding that if your body is accustomed to caffeine it doesn't trigger a cortisol reaction. This is more a problem for the occasional caffeine drinker.3

Pretty much all of the negatives that go with caffeine go away in pretty short order, assuming regular consumption. I'm so damned caffeine adapted at this point, that I can (and have) consumed several concentrated "energy shots" within an hour, to no ill effect. Well, unless you count disappointment as an ill effect. I didn't even get jittery. It was sad.4 -

Ha! So you didn't get wound up like Tweak on South Park... (That's bad?)
Thanks for the enlightenment. I am pleased to retool my self-image as highly caffeine adapted.2 -

You can throw adapted behind anything and make it sound more positive. "I'm not an alcoholic. I'm ethyl adapted."6 -
I found this article to be interesting about coffee and caffeine. http://www.marksdailyapple.com/the-definitive-guide-to-coffee/#axzz4FjCAbEj9
I don't know how the science holds up as I didn't dig that deep. I was interested in the part about the varying ability to process caffeine between individuals...I'm one of those people who can drink 6 shots of espresso and take a nap!3 -

That might be the quote of the day! I'm still laughing.

It's worth noting that a tolerance for a substance doesn't mean said substance is not still affecting the body. The occasional glass of wine or cup of coffee is highly unlikely to have any negative effects whatsoever, but chronic use of either will negatively impact a body's health. Like anything else, it eventually catches up to you through one mechanism or another.
I have experience with both and very strongly recommend avoiding chronic use of either to optimize health, well-being, and performance.1 -
I have switched from normal to diet, and then the weight finally started coming off!!
If anything, it has actually started helping with my cravings. I would drink 4-5 cans of normal soda a day. I started off with a fair amount originally, but I have maybe 1-2 now. I often can't finish it.
I don't know if the fact it doesn't have aspartame in it. I've tried a number of kinds and couldn't enjoy the taste whatsoever until I tried one that didn't have that sweetener. I haven't noticed any adverse effects yet!! The only time I had body aches and such, I downed some melted bouillon cubes and felt fantastic within 20 min.3 -

Hmm. Positive spin...
"I ain't no sex addict, yer honor; I'm merely ____ adapted."2
