Heel / Achilles Tendon pain

I have had absolutely no pain when I run for the past two months, the entirety of my running career. I have however been having intermitent heel and/or Achilles tendon pain in my right foot when I walk. It seems to get worse after a run, yet never bothers me at all during the run. I don't believe I'm coming down on the heel when I run, it's almost like the effort I take to keep it up so that I don't come down on the heel so that it doesn't hurt later when I walk is what is causing the pain later. It does feel like the bottom of the heel is bruised and the Achilles is tight.
Any ideas for getting rid of this? stretching? More walking? Anyone know of anything similar?

Well that's a bummer! I don't want to give up running after I've just started.
My running shoes are good, but I only wear them for running. I guess that I need to wear them more often and my less supportive shoes less often. I suppose I should get a second pair of running shoes for when my first pair are soaking wet, like today.
I have the being obese working against me, but trying to fix that.
Well the first plan is to just use my exercise bike, strength train, and start the yoga I've been trying to get started on, for the next week. No running. Stretch the problem area daily and re-evaulate in a week.
I guess even C25K was too much too soon for my really out of shape self. I will run though. I just have to figure out how to do it without making this worse.0 -
Julie Donahue, who is a major inspiration, has really bad plantar fasciitis and just finished her first 5k.
You might want to reach out to her to see how she overcame the same challenges that you are having.
What I've heard is that massaging the bottom of your foot with ice frozen in a dixie cup helps a lot with PF.0 -
Calf stretching & foam rolling the calf might help. I used to have a similar issue. Deep stretching helped a lot as well as always wearing shoes with good support (even at all times inside the house and at work). In the past I would always walk around barefoot or just socks inside the house. Now I always wear shoes with good arch support. But I think the deep calf stretching helped most of all. I like to stand on the edge of a step or curb and let one heel drop over the edge and hold there for at least a minute, then repeat for the other side. Do this immediately after a run.0

Oh, forgot to mention the Foot Rubz ball. Great for massaging the arch!0

Y'up spiky massage ball for arch is fab for PF but doesn't sound like PF as Achilles not usually in the mix.0

The step/curb stretch was a lifesaver for me. I do this about 5-6 times/day! Sounds more like the spot where your achillies connects is inflamed. Taking some time off and completely resting, while doing a LOT of stretching will help you heal the fastest without causing more serious injury (and will have you back on the road in no time). But you're right to reevaluate in a week, and if it's still causing you pain check in with a Podiatrist. They can recommend further stretches and possibly even get you some insoles for your shoes that will help your foot function more efficiently.
Hope you feel better soon! You're doing great!0 -
I sometimes get achilles pain. When I stretch after my run, I sit down with legs out, stretch my toes out and rub my arch. Seems to help.0

After much research and examining my symptoms. I do think it's a tight Achilles tendon rather than PF. I stretched it on Friday and off and on yesterday. Today looked to be a relatively cool morning with the rest of the week hotter, plus I only had one more day to do to finish C25K, so I decided to do the last run as an experiment.
I relaxed and didn't worry about where I landed on my foot since trying to land forward as I tried to do on Friday caused much more pain once I started walking than I had ever had before. I ran the 30 minutes that way. The result was I that I have very little heel pain now.
I do have some though, so I really will give myself the break now and not run, but definitely stretch the muscles for the next week.
I really do appreciate all the replies.0
