Butter and bacon...not healthy?

http://darwinian-medicine.com/dont-believe-the-hype-eating-a-lot-of-butter-bacon-and-other-very-fatty-foods-wont-make-you-healthy/

Found this article this morning. Thoughts? One of the points the author makes is that fat is not satiating... but for me, if I eat a large, fatty meal in the beginning of my day, I am full all the way until bed time.

The author wants to promote Paleo over LCHF concepts by being really nit-picky about the definition of processed foods.

The point is valid that if you aren't intentional about ensuring veggies and fruits (or vitamin supplements) are included in your diet, a high fat diet can cause serious health issues... but that's true of any diet mechanism which doesn't include fruits and veggies, including eating ONLY Paleo approved items while excluding fruits and veggies.

The author seems to have a limited understanding of how non-Paleo diets operate. I've never seen a diet program designed for long-term use which says to exclude nutrient dense vegetables. It's as though the author made uninformed opinions about other diet plans based on summaries, rather than deeply understanding the science behind non-Paleo options.

I agree that he's just viewing it from the point of view of someone on a paleo diet which most LCHF people are not.

I like the last line that if you are someone who wants to gain weight you can add these foods...or you know if you are me and you want to lose 28 lbs. lol

Tune out random articles and find a few trusted sources. Phinney & Volek, Jonny Bowden, Maria Emmerich are good resources. I've been doing this for 2 years and have fine-tuned along the way. There is a LOT of misinformation out there, and much of it is because people are intent on proving their way of eating as the ONLY way of eating.

Do lot's of research. I try to use real butter most of the time over processed butter. It's sugar that mostly makes us fat and un healthy. It does ton's of bad effects on us including feeding cancers and disease's. Remember to watch out for Fruits also they are loaded with sugar. When i stick to my LCHF and sometimes Keto i feel tons better and get better workouts in. I only eat meat, cheese and some low carb veggies plus take vitamins.

I have to admit, I don't go out of my way to eat veggies. That being said, most of my diet is eggs, meat, nuts and cheeses. I also like making keto pancakes, waffles, and bread using flaxseed and oat fiber. Once a week I will make roasted Brussels sprouts or green beans..

I'm also supplementing with magnesium and ensuring to add sodium. Do I need to take a multivitamin to make up for the lack of veggies in my diet?

I eat carnivore and I don't take one. But it's only been a bit over a week so I haven't noticed anything being deficit.

Maybe one of the longer time carnivores can weigh in? @Karlottap ?

As part of my research I've read that for long term health as a full carnivore you need to regularly include organs and glands in your diet to get everything you need without supplements. Haven't tried it out yet though.

My diet is similar to this - I don't eat a lot of vegies. I do have magnesium supplements and take a multi, maybe I should start focus on eating more low starchy and carby vege. I don't think Bacon is a vegetable :(

As for organ meats...have you tried liverwurst? While I am not a fan of liver alone, liverwurst fried with some eggs in the morning is really quite good, and I find myself craving it sometimes. There may be some preservatives in there, but bacon and sausage usually do too!
I plan on continuing to eat my hotdogs, bacon and sausage :yum:

@Kirstie155 I have never had liverwurst. But I have had liver. I will look for some liverwurst to try.

I do like that organ meats are generally much cheaper than buying chicken breasts, or even chicken thighs. Helps the budget!

@FIT_Goat - Will you please weigh in with your research on carnivory NOT needing supplements?

I am at work, but I will try and post more later.

Short answer, long term carnivores do not need supplements or to consume organs meats. There is sufficient nutrients in fatty muscle meat alone.
