Wow, just experienced my first electrolyte deficiency muscle cramps. My left bicep feels like it is one big knot trying to force it's way out of my body. YOWZERS!! Does it hurt! 2 glasses of salt water 1180mg worth and 380 mg of magnesium are taking the edge off. Can anyone suggest the best potassium supplement to use? The capsules make me really nausus. And which LC veggies are best to eat to get maximum magnesium and potassium? Also does electrolyte imbalance indicate the body is in ketosis?

Eat plenty of spinach and avocado. Spinach is super low calorie/low net carb and has all 4 major electrolytes; sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium. Avocado is high fat, low net carb and has magnesium and potassium along with a lot of other wonderful vitamins and minerals.3

Second this! You can also find potassium chloride salt to sprinkle on your avocado to make it even better. I think the brand is called No Salt or Nu Salt. Should be in the spices section of your local grocer.

Thank you @samanthaluangphixay! I drank another 1/4 tsp, then added 1/4 tsp more to my buttered coffee. The cramp is finally going away. And will pick up some avocados here in just a bit, making my grocery list now.1

I use Lite Salt by Morton's that is half salt, half potassium chloride, but I can't use it often, as if my magnesium is on point or slightly under at all, adding potassium makes me dump magnesium. Apparently, I get a decent amount of potassium in my meals. I only add this when I'm sweating heavily or otherwise dehydrated, then I add it with magnesium carbonate in a "keto-ade" so just watch as you add things, and see what you can do or figure out. We're all so different, so it's really a "play" with it game to figure it out.
That being said, getting organic veggies in this case when you can, or local is better, IMO, they tend to have better nutrition when non-GMO and pesticide free, etc., so you can be more certain that you're getting what is says you are getting. And remember that if you are not absorbing anything well, testing for low stomach acid and digestion issues can help - as with those issues, it's hard to properly absorb any electrolytes!0 -
@knitormiss be careful with the local produce, many of them still use pesticides, even your roadside stands, go with organic if you can. I learned that after my squash plants were nearly decimated by cucumber beetles, I couldn't figure out how others locally had such huge crops, then it dawned on me that they are using something to kill the bugs. most likely sevin, I used all the organic stuff that is recommended and nothing really worked, it did a little but not enough. that's why they use the heavy duty stuff, but I refuse to use that so it sucked. there are ways to grow organic without losing everything, this was my first year though so it was a learning experience.3

@KnitOrMiss do you think a probiotic would help with absorption?0

I don't know if probiotics help with that, but I don't think they would hurt. I also on lc got some major issues with loose stool about the third time around so I started recently with probiotics to help with that. some people get an imbalance when abruptly going keto with the good bacteria in their intestines so that may help prevent that. the digestive enzymes knit recommended to me are suppose to help with absorption, though I don't know how to gauge if they are actually working or not. but my belly feels good so that's a good sign3 -
@trish55011, probiotics help the gut function better overall, but the absorption issues with electrolytes is stomach acid and digestive enzyme deficiencies. So adding bitter foods can stimulate these naturally, ACV with meals can help on the front end, digestive enzymes on the actual absorption side, but it's all such a balance. So figure out where you're at. Personally, I use all three of these and add diatomaceous earth, too.
And Steph, yeah, I bought some herbs from a guy this weekend, and I swear, he's a blast to talk to. He quit smoking a couple years back, and he's working on getting all the chemicals he can out of his food and intake...so he won't use chemicals at all on his plants. He uses crops next to each other than naturally do this, and then plants some specific flowers that prevent some stuff around it, and then has his own secret methods. I don't buy as much produce, but the herbs were pretty and fragrant, though my body doesn't like digesting fresh basil any more than it does lettuce, so that's fun...0 -

yeah it takes a lot to learn what to do to prevent the bugs or diseases from killing everything. makes sense why commercial farmers use the toxic stuff, it seems the route you would go if you were trying to produce a lot of food, ya know. though I know there are big farms that do it all organic, yet some of that stuff they use is no good too.
funny story this kinda reminded me of my late aunts sister in law explaining to me last week how toxic aspartame is to you and the effects it has on your body, all while she was smoking a cigarette and wearing a nicotine patch2
