Hi, just joined the group for some inspiration, ideas and motivation. I thrive on low carb, and the keto diet really appeals, but I am breastfeeding a toddler so not sure its a good idea to go too low at the moment.

I had gestational diabetes whilst pregnant, and using low carb lost 3 stone whilst growing a very healthy and happy bump, but slipped into old ways and its all back on and more.

I am concentrating on eliminating junk, added sugar and obvious high carb foods like bread and pasta. But not limiting veg for example. Lets see how we go!!

Look forward to seeing what everyone else is doing and greatful for any tips!
Jo

Welcome to the group. :) And congratulations!

Leaving the veggies sounds like a great plan to run with. I'm afraid that I have no info on keto while BFing but veggies and whole foods can hardly be wrong. I would consider easing into it so it doesn't disrupt your milk supply. Not too low calorie or too low carb all of a sudden.

    Best wishes. :)

All you need to do for your lil' one is to eat enough calories. Your body will take care of the milk composition on its own. For you, you need calories and a good level of micronutrients. I was pretty much keto while I breastfed my youngest. I had gestational diabetes, and the low-carb diet I used was between 120g and 150g and I still needed meds. After the birth, the GD did not go away, so I eased the carbs down to under 100 and below. I basically just ate meat and above-ground veggies. I didn't count. I never had any supply issues. Just make sure you stay properly hydrated and keep your electrolyte levels up. I breastfed him for 21 months, and he weaned himself at that point.

Thanks both - been going almost 2 weeks and apart from today there has been no supply issue (and today its cycle related i think, will be fine tomorrow)

I'm not going to really count, but will try and log so I can go back and spot an issue if I don't loose - but so far so good.

    :-)
