introducing myself and needing help...

Hi everyone,
I am Joyce-Elayne, after being overweight all my life and always on a low calorie diet I have never known success. In March this year I read an article about low carbohydrate high fat way of living, I bought the Atkins Diet Book (this goes against everything the hospital have been telling me over the years as I am diabetic). I started following the Atkins way on April 23rd this year with incredible results I have now lost 37lbs. I have a very long journey ahead of me I am 5.3" and now 233lbs, I have a desk job so consider myself as quite sedentary. I have bought a treadmill and also a fitbit flex, and I am trying to walk 10,000 steps a day (Not always possible). I guess I am looking for support and friends from like minded people, this is why I looked for a ketogenic diet group.
I have hit a problem, I am in ketosis (large ketones showing on a ketostix) but I cannot understand why my scales are going up and not down, my best weight was 230lbs and this seems to be going up I am now 233lbs despite being in ketosis (I jump on the scales everyday, not recommended I know, I just can't help myself, I guess I am excited about finally losing weight). Can anyone please help me understand what is happening, but even more looking forward to making and meeting new friends in this group.
Thank you for taking time to read my intro.

Hi Joyce! I enjoyed reading your introduction. My name is Kimberly. I am not a diabetic, but I am insulin resistant with PCOS. I truly believe that Atkins / low carb is the best way for people like us to keep our weight under control. It amazes me how physicians push low fat diets, when fats are not the problem!
I've read that just because your ketostix is at the dark end of the spectrum, does not mean you are any more in ketosis than you would be if you were showing a lighter color. Most likely you are dehydrated, and showing a dark color (heavier concentration of ketones in your urine). As long as you are in, you're in.
Would you mind opening up your diary, so we can take a look? My guess is that one of the following is happening:
1. You are consuming too many calories
2. Too much protein (when you consume too much, it is converted into glucose)
3. You are not drinking enough water
4. Its possible you are getting a false positive from your ketostix, and you are not actually in ketosis. The most accurate way of testing is with a blood keto meter. (I'm not too familiar with these)0 -
After looking at your diary, the biggest thing I see is that you need to be eating MUCH more. To give you a little bit of perspective, I am 5'2 and 140 pounds and I allow myself up to 1600 calories each day. Since you are at a heavier weight, you need to allow yourself to eat even more. While carbs are the most important aspect of this diet, calories are still important. You are eating way too little, and your body is revolting. I imagine that you need to be eating at least 1800 calories each day, at a minimum.
If your goal is to be in ketosis, you need to consume more fat than protein. I would suggest going in and manually changing your goals to 5% carbs / 30% protein / 65% fat, or something close to that. Don't be afraid of fat - its what will keep you satisfied and keep you in ketosis (fat burning mode!)0 -
Thank you, :flowerforyou:
I will see if I can change my goals, I can't see where to change them at the moment but
I will give it a go.

Hello Souzan, welcome!
You can change your goals by clicking on your "Home" tab and then down towards the bottom is a green tab that says "change goals." That will allow you to manually change your goals to suit your macros. Don't forget to subtract your fiber though to find out your true net carb each day.
Congrats on the 37 lbs, you're on your way!0 -
Welcome Joyce - Elayne,
Keto is a wonderful way of life! I can't even begin to list all of the benefits I have had.
I can/will send you some directions on setting up your macros. I will also send you a friend request. This is a great group. Very supportive and helpful.
Welcome again,
Jenn0
