I was googling the number of carbs in red wine (seems to be about 4), when I came across this old Atkins quote, which seems appropriate:
“Here’s the problem with all alcoholic beverages, and the reason I recommend refraining from alcohol consumption on the diet. Alcohol, whenever taken in, is the first fuel to burn. While that’s going on, your body will not burn fat. This does not stop the weight loss, it simply postpones it, since the alcohol does not store as glycogen (starch), you immediately go back into ketosis after the alcohol is used up.
If you must drink alcohol, wine is an acceptable addition to levels beyond the Induction diet. If wine does not suit your taste, straight liquor such as scotch, rye, vodka, and gin would be appropriate, as long as the mixer is sugarless; this means no juice, tonic water; or non-diet soda. Seltzer and diet soda are appropriate.”
I tend to choose gin & soda when I want to have a drink. Also I find that if I have a couple, I find it much easier to eat off plan, so that effect should be considered too

I've had some dry wine (white or red) or other non sugary alcohol, most weekends from the very beginning. It will have a temporary effect on ketosis but as long as you understand that it's completely manageable.
Going out of ketosis for short periods of time shouldn't really be a problem. You may want to skip alcohol the first 4 to 6 weeks while you adapt though.
Be aware of your extra extra needs for water and sodium. And reduced tolerance5 -
If you are going to drink wine....drink FitVine! http://www.fitvinewine.com/
It is organic, biodynamic and independent third party tested to make sure there is no junk in it. My BF and I love it because we can drink a glass or two with a nice dinner (we aren't big drinkers at all) and not get a headache or feel like crap the next day!
Their Cabernet Sauvignon - Per 5oz glass, 95 calories and 3.4g of carbohydrates4 -

All of this! I've had no issues and I've had some celebrations this month which involved wine, rum and diet coke, and some tequila. But as Sunny said, be mindful when you drink, you're probably a cheaper drunk now than you were before.2 -
After the first month, I've had wine about twice a week and it's not had a major impact on my diet. I've still managed to lose weight most weeks but probably slower than if I gave up alcohol altogether (that's a compromise I'm happy to live with).
As mentioned above my tolerance for drink has massively dropped though so be careful if drinking in bars etc!2 -
I drink early harvest white wine by Lindemans low carb low cal low alcohol, maybe not as fun though0

Nice work. That pretty much nails it!
A couple situation-specific additions:- If you're diabetic, straight liquor will tend to lower your BG as your liver gets to work on the poison you've fed it.
- As @Laurashar34 points out, "my tolerance for drink has massively dropped though so be careful if drinking in bars etc!"

Just wanted to put my 5 pence in. I thought everyone was exaggerating but NO! My alcohol tolerance level dropped this weekend, massively. OMG I have turned into a cheap date overnight!7

You've gotten a lot of really good advice. I do drink a glass of red wine most nights or occasionally a shot of tequila and yes, I am still losing weight. That being said, I do not have diabetes or any problems with my blood sugar and I try to make sure that it fits into my macros for the day. There is no doubt in my mind though, that those last 10 pounds would be coming off faster if I cut out the alcohol.1

Heh. I hear ya. I gained about 5-7LBS with menopause and I know I would/could lose it quicker without the glass of wine. But, then, menopause would suck that much more. ha.4 -
Here's a joke I ran across last year.
A long married husband and wife are lounging on their patio, sipping Cabernet.
WIFE: Oh, my beloved. I don't know what I'd do without you. I'm not sure I could face life alone.
HUSBAND: Is that the wine talking?
WIFE: No, it's me talking to the wine.5 -

You can provided it's not a sweet wine, and as others have said whatever alcohol you ingest will be the first to burn so it just means you lose at a slower rate since your body is playing catch up. I've also noticed that I've become a cheap drunk and half a glass of wine is more than enough for me now.0

A good man can make you feel strong, sexy and ready to take on the world. Oh wait, sorry. That's wine. It's wine that does that.3
