Eating Before & After Working Out

I am unclear on what to eat before and after I workout. Usually it seems I eat 30-45 mins before I workout. Usually it is not a meal, but a snack. Should I be eating foods more rich in protein or carbs?

What you eat, is entirely up to you. What do you like to eat? A balanced meal would be optimal and should help you with your macros. There are a lot of articles supporting eating around your workouts for better results and muscle recovery and I second that. After your workout a shake with fruit and milk would definitely hit tbe spot, if you like it and it's easy for you, for instance.

I workout in the am. I have a protein/fiber pancake/waffle for breakfast and then have a protein shake with berries after working out. No guess work. But if that doesn't work for you, listen to your body, make sure you eat consistently through out the day, hit your calories and give protein the attention it needs.

Yes, the idea is to have a smallish something before working out to give you some energy and high protein and carbs after working out to help with muscle repair.
However, these are like the small details and it is more important to make sure you eat enough and enough protein over the course of the whole day.
As @TerezaToledo has said, it is really about finding a way of eating that works for you and your lifestyle and that is doable in the long term and most of all is ENJOYABLE!
Nutrient timing becomes more important for elite athletes but for most of us it's about the calories and the protein!!!!
